Stuck at "Retrieving list of maps"

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I was happilly playing on one of my characters, with absolutely no lag, then the "server responding" error message popped up and refused to budge. I assumed it was a server crash, yet everything still says the server is online.

I quit the game and attempted to log back in, but when accessing the character I just get to the "Retrieving list of maps" screen and it hangs and then dumps me back to login.

When attempting to log into other characters, it logs me in and then after a few seconds of successfully being in the world I recieve a "server not responding" error again and wind up going through the same process as above.

I know it isn't issue on my end, since my net connection is running at a steady 17mbps, but even the launcher and these forums seem to be hanging somewhat which leads me to suspect that its the euro proxy playing up at cryptic's end.

It sounds like the TCP 7xxx port(s) are an issue for you right now.

Try running the game in US or EU proxy first. Proxy runs the game (not patching, but in game) on TCP 80.

If you don't want to run in proxy then you'll need to look into the TCP port that is the problem, we can go from there.

First, please try proxy from the launcher options first.

    Getting exactly the same here....

Thing is I was playing fine up until about 4pm GMT and then after that I started getting the problem. Incidently 4pm GMT is when my ISP's peak time limit kicks in.

This has never been a problem for me since the game launched but funny that there was a new patch this morning...

I can't see anything on the patch notes abotu fixes for connection issues but has anything been done to the traffic identification 'under the table'?

When I had similar issues with Champions Online it was because Cryptic changed the traffic to resemble P2P (which gets throttled by most ISPs at peak times) and eventually my ISP identified the traffic and allowed it on their network at peak and problem solved.

I wasn't having this issue before the patch (was playing fine at peak time all weekend) so I'm loathe if I am to now go through that process again with my ISP because of a Cryptic ****-up...

Why did Cryptic have to change aything?

It was around 4pm for me as well.

This isn't TCP and Port issues because even the launcher is having problems connecting to the cryptic servers - sitting at "patching" for quite an extensive time waiting for a server response before I can even attempt to log into the game itself.

This is precisely the sort of behaviour that the game displays when the server is under massive strain, which seems unlikely at this time of day, and since someone else in europe is clearly having the same issues it would also show quite clearly that is not something going on at my end.

I'm having the same problem. I'm in UK but am not on a BT Wholesale based product. I'm with Xilo LLU who do not traffic-shape at all. Hence probably a server or routing issue.

Same for me, massive slowdown from even trying to load up the launcher.

    Takes 2 - 3 minutes to load
Another 2 - 3 minutes to get to character screen
Another 2 - 3 minutes to Retrieve the map
5 minutes to load the actual map with 'server not responding'
When I finally get ingame, cannot move or extreme rubberbanding.

Trying to transition to another map, via beam out etc. = Disconnect and it starts all over again.

This is happening on Holodeck and Tribble.

    UK player here, AOL ISP

Same happening here, takes long time for launcher to activate. If it does get past the launcher to engage ..................nothing happening. Can't see why its got to be a isp or any other fault that people are suggesting as this has only happend since today's patch which has caused the maps in game to be over sized and can't shrink, fps and lag issuses.

When I do manage to get ingame my ships been destroyed and the server crash's. :(

Now after typing this I can't even get launcher to work

Virgin Media here too, but I highly doubt this is related to the ISP as bobigmac above is having the same issues on not only a different IP but an entirely differnet network

Same here, Am on Talk talk. But never had any problems with the game prior to todays patch. I am currently stuck on a load screen between zones and the game keeps informing me it is getting disconected. Also had the same problem of stuck on R/m AND getting kicked for no reason. All since 4pm Gmt

The patcher uses TCP 7255 to patch to a random cryptic patch server. Until you've gone to the depths of getting a packet capture of your connection and analyzing it, you can not state it isn't a tcp or port issue.

I've just tried changing the proxy settings via the launcher - setting it to either US or EU lets me into the game, but with horrendous lag (which apparently is to be expected when setting proxy manualy in this way).

Clearly this is an issue with cryptic's proxy connection to europe, as I had originaly susspected.

Perhaps not, but since clearly a lot of other people from the UK are suffering from precisely the same issue, and since the issue appears also to be affecting the connection both to patching servers, game servers, and the website servers, it seems fairly obvious what the issue is.

    OK back from fresh testing.

Sitting at SOL with no proxy, connecting from USA - zero lag or issues

Switched to EU proxy, connecting from USA (long trip to and back) - 12 second retrieving maps, constant lag once in at SOL, I would assume lots of packet loss

I was connecting to EU2.proxy according to the loading screen

Have not tested beyond this, wanted to let you know from USA.

I've just been trying to use the US proxy and it doesn't let me in at all - gives me the same issue I have when attempting to login with no proxy set, get the "retrieving list of maps" screen which hangs and drops me back to the login screen.

    eu1.proxy.crypticstudios.com

    eu2.proxy.crypticstudios.com
    ec2-79-125-26-110.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com [79.125.26.110]

I'm getting no packet loss from Colorado USA to 79.125.26.110 on TCP 80, latency is 155ms average with a max of 191ms.

I don't have access to the Amazonaws.com network, but I can only assume their connection to Cryptic Boston, MA servers is poor.

According to people in EU running without proxy gives you the same retrieving maps, lag, and packet loss right?

My connection from Colorado US to Cryptic Boston MA servers is fine with no proxy and with US proxy. That points to the connection between Europe and USA or a hop on either side.

Can you guys from EU (UK) do a tracert from your system to 208.95.184.25 and post it?

I'm another one reporting this issue.

I normally connect via the EU proxy without issue. A router reset and restart sped things up for moment or three, but the game server still kicks the game client on a timeout (so it's unlikely to be a bad IP or stale connection). I've tried setting the proxy to 'none' and also to 'US', without much change.

General traffic from the UK to the US with other products seems to be working OK, so I don't think it's my ISP, BT Wholesale or Level 5. It's more likely something happening either with Cryptic's hardware or some kind of protocol change (the former being more likely).

Either way, I can login and can even get into a PvP match, but will be kicked back to the login stage within 10 minutes.

Thanks guys, so may not be XO

Would need to have access to the routes and connect logs (Netflow) at the Cryptic border level to go much further with this or have access to the system in that DC.

I would think NetOps from Cryptic would be looking into this, will try to tag a dev in IRC if one comes by.

EDIT: Just a reminder, I'm not having any issues connecting inside of the US with no proxy or US proxy. Connecting with EU proxy is unplayable from Denver CO USA.

UK, Virgin Media, here. Same issues (very slow patching, website slow), traceroute looks ok (100ms, rather than the 25ms or so I get on EU MMOs) :

However, did note when using pingplotter than I'm getting around 2% packetloss at the cryptic border router. (Edit-This is unlikely to be enough to cause this level of degradation)
