Honestly I don't know the answer to that, but I have another question along those lines. I noticed in the Tactical Officers Lt. Commander skill "Security" description that it improves firearms, does that mean that it improves Rifles and all firearms or just the pistol ones?
While I cant always decipher the rather "cryptic" (no pun inteded lol) thinking of the devs, I believe that "firearms" means everything: rifles, pistols and those heavy weapons like the arc-waves.
I also had a fleet-mate say that anything that affects cannons affects turrets, since they are after-all, tiny cannons.

Confirming that Turrets are a type of Cannon, when it comes to any skill or ability boosting Cannons.

Security boost Pistols, Soldier boosts Rifles, and Special Forces boosts Assault Weapons.
The description in Security is basically a run-on sentence.

Yes, It is supposed to improve turret damage.
