Critical crash causing computer shutdown

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I have started experiencing critical crashes while playing the game. Nothing in particular seems to trigger it from what I can tell. My specs are

Dual Core i7 2.67 GHz processor
4gb DDR2 ram
Radeon HD 4800 (with up to date drivers)
Windows Vista Home premium 64bit

I can't seem to find a solution to this issue, which is greatly frustrating as I really enjoy the game and would like to continue playing.

Any help or thoughts would be great, thanks!

I am using Realtek High Definition Audio and Dynamic Lighting was on but I turned it off and got the same crash a few minutes later.

Did it start after the latest patch?
I'm having similar issues now and nothing (i mean nothing) else has changed with my computer except the most recent patches for STO.

Yeah I have, but I have been having these issues for a while. I noticed on the last crash the sound starting stuttering a lot before it actually froze up.

Post a Dxdiag log here so we can see if you have any conflicts. Also, try running the game in safemode from launcher options, and see if you get the same crash.

there is a magor bug in realtek sound drivers. Normally the game disables sound in the game when using the 64 bit realtek drivers unless you use the -ignorex64check command in the luancher option section to disable this check of 64bit. Even then the driver will cause crashing.

One thing you can try to reduce the crashes is be sure you are using the latest version of the sound driver (it seems to cause less crashes)

Im not sure if it helps but Ive had a few crashes on me. I have noticed a pattern though, so far its always happened in space combat missions. Ill be fighting some ships, the game will lag, "Server Not Responding" will pop up, my PC will lag (sound and everything) and then I get a quick blue screen and my PC will restart.

Its happened about 6 times in past 7-10 days.

Windows error reports that my PC was forced to shutdown to prevent "irreparable damage" from occurring.

    Its really quite annoying

Having the same problem with a similar set up, only started in the last week or so, now constant ctd's making the game unplayable.

I already have the latest sound driver from what I can tell. Is there an avenue I can go through to get this resolved with the company? No intentions of paying for another month at this rate.

I have the same issue, in the middle of the game, sometimes just cruising around. BAM.. blue screen for a split second, then my computer restarts.

Realtek just put new audio driver out on the 13th try them.

    Try this:

Uninstall both video and audio drivers.
Download and run ccleaner after that (do the reg scan and fix too)
Download and install driver sweeper from guru3d.com
go into safe mode and run driver sweeper and scan for realtek and ati then clean. keep scaning until nothing shows up.
Reboot computer and re-install audio and video drivers.

    good luck!

OK, I think I finally found the correct forum, this seems to be affecting me as well.

This almost always occurs during ground missions, often just standing around the ESD, not even fighting. The sound will "buzz" for a second or so while the display fills with small diagonal lines, then total system crash and either it hangs, or reboots.

I've updated all drivers (although I've not scoured the system of old drivers as previously suggested,) and issue persists. It might happen 5 minutes into the game or hours without any apparent problems. There is no consistent pattern to these system crashes and no warning aside from that described in the previous paragraph. Oh, the Dynamic Lighting is disabled in STO.

I also have Realtek integrated audio, along with Vista HP x64, so this may be part of the problem. I've installed the lastest Realtek HD Audio drivers, dated 3/22 I believe, but still have random system crashes but ONLY while playing STO. I play Aion, SWG and many single-player games and never have any crashes like these.

Hopefully either Cryptari or Realtek will fix this issue permanently... someday.

Same problem. Windows 7, Geforce 9 series, 4 gb RAM. (Acer Aspire).
I think Ive had all the blue screens with all the codes possible. Only happens with STO.
