Connection problems in the UK 7pm-midnight

Hi,

I live in the UK and my game becomes unplayable in the evening due to massive lag on all actions. Last time I spoke to them on the phone about this they claimed it was either something on my end, or something on Cryptics end.

I refuse to believe this TRIBBLE from BT but have given them a little time to resolve it. Have just filed another complaint with them because they haven't.

Does anybody have any technical knowledge as to what it might be the ISP is doing to mess with the connection to the STO servers that is borking this up so much, so when the claim it isn't them I can rebuttle.

It happens without fail every evening at 7pm GMT which clearly isn't peak time for the STO servers which is probably during American peak hours.

Here is my nettest during these times, I am guessing it is to do with the ports in the 7k range.
contacting nettest server..

out of interest, is this something connecting through a proxy is likely to fix?

It is called basicly traffic shaping. It is covered under BT fair use policy. It is where they delay non priority packets (games packets and ports) in faver of higher priority traffic (higer paying type traffic like html, ftp, VPN used alot by business)
They vary the anount and type of shaping baised on peak times and amount of network traffic.

Aye, but when I accused them of packet shaping last time they denied it adamantly. Usually they don't block games to such a massive extent, I have noticed they do bittorrent a lot, that I can cope with, I can run that whilst I sleep, I however can't play STO in my sleep.. lol

Your nettest shows how all the TCP 7xxx ports have really low results but 80 and 443 at "normal".

And yes, run your game through the EU proxy setting to see if this resolves your problem.

well STO does sent a lot of small packets that can be misis identified as p2p traffic. and the front line never admits to traffic shapping but if you search you find articles about BT and thier shapping.

And FYI, when you run with the EU proxy you will be using port TCP 80 and not TCP 7xxx for game play. Patching still occurs on TCP 7255, unless they fixed the path via proxy option.

I absolutely hate BT with a passion. I only have them for home phone (was forced to when I got here in the UK and hit with a 125quid charge just for some idiot to flip a switch!) and went to O2 for 7.50 a month for internet. I have no issues at all and play at different times of the day and night.

I wish everyone would drop BT and they would go out of business. Best suggestion is to switch companies when you get the chance.

i get the same thing its hit and miss whether i can log in or not, 10 am its amazing, in first time must be lovely to be other people playing this game but weekends and 4pm on wards forget it hehe

oh well, ive given up cancelled my sub tonight no point wasting more money on something i have only managed to play 3 times this month.

dont worry ill be back in 6 months to have another go when they have sorted out the isps to allow STO to work and added some more features, just feel a bit like ive spent 50 quid and got nothing for my money so far.
