Ok so this game is totally different then what I usually play (SWG) so I kinda have to relearn some things. First off, what kind of ship is recommended to start out with?

your first ship doesn't really matter, regardless of it's looks (miranda/centaur/shikahr/kitbash) it'll be the same ship. by the time you get to your second ship which is where you'll make the choice between escort/science/cruiser you'll hopefully be more prepped to make a decision, personally being a tactical officer i went with the escorts, but i've read of people mixing and matching different ships to different skillsets to good effect.

OK gotcha. Also I am thinking about going down the Doctor path, as that is what I enjoyed most in other games. Can you be in this path and still be able to handle yourself in battle?

As a Science Officer, I enjoy a variety of skill buffs that make up for the heavy weapons available to the Tactical or Engineering classes. Getting to LCDR can be a small grind (am a CDR now) but if you balance your skills and that of your Bridge Officers, it is more than easy enough to compete with the combat classes.

How much game time does it take to lvl up?

Science ships FTW!!! That said, I run a tactical officer in command of a science ship and find it works rather well for combat reasons.

Anyway, level up depends on how you play. If you want to rush to the top, mindless grinding is where you'll be. However, if you run the missions and toss in some exploration mission as they open up, you can level in a decent amount of time. I've been playing for a month and I'm at captain 7 ... so there ya go. But I also played my Kilngon toon in there too ....

Ok last question ....at least for today. Are there guilds or groups like in other MMORPG's?

I played since launch and my liberated Borg engineer recently made Rear Admiral.

As to ships, I suggest trying them all. Your first ship in each class is free with the promotion. If you want to switch it will cost you credits. But I suggest trying it out to see which ship fits your style. In general, cruisers are tanks/healers, sci ships are like mages, and tactical ships are like fighters. I've gravitated toward science ships, which have higher tech, lots of sneaky tricks, good durability, and the best shields.

Any profession can run any ship. Again, try a skill class that fits you. Science officer is a fine choice.

Yeah, we call them fleets here; there is a recruitment thread elsewhere on the forums if you want to check some of them out.
