Direct3D Error at game launch

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I have NO idea what could be wrong. This error started occurring AFTER the patch on March 5th. Click here to see the error message

The game WILL run after the crash report box and it does a full scan then it works fine. But there is no cause for this error because it DID NOT occur before the latest patch. All my drivers are current and my OS is up to date.

Just for troubleshooting purposes, try starting the game in safemode from the game launcher. If you still get the same error, you can reinstall the drivers, or delete the .dll files and exe.hogg file in teh STO directory, then force verify using the launcher option.

When you run DXDIAG does it report any errors?

No errors from DXdiag. all my drivers are current and MS certified as I stated in my original post. Like I said this error DID NOT OCCUR BEFORE THE LATEST PATCH. I DO NOT have to force the launcher to verify the files, it does that because of the error anyway.

I'm not reinstalling my drivers, that is NOT the problem. I know well enough about computers to know that after 14 years of experience with them and a college degree in CIS that the drivers are NOT causing this problem. I have about 35 games on my PC and THIS game is the only one doing this.

You need to be more specific on what files you want me to delete as I don't want to end up reinstalling the entire game if I delete the wrong files.

According to Impulse (where I bought it) the game isn't installed correctly (I verified the install via Impulse) so now it's re-downloading the whole game now just lovely.

So I will wait and see if THIS is the problem. I'm hoping it is otherwise I'm NOT going to be a happy camper.

Are you using a third party program to manage STO (Impulse)?

You can always just install it from the STO download or the older beta client.

I'll try downloading the game by itself without Impulse. It wouldn't be the 1st time I had troubles with Stardock software.

Make sure you aren't installing it in Program Files if you have Windows Vista or 7.

Also confirm you are right click Run as administrator when you install and when you start the game to patch.

It's not the Impulse client. It's definitely something in the game itself. I downloaded it separately from the startrek online site and ran it. This error occurs when I set my resolution in-game to my desktop resolution which is 1440X900 60hz Fullscreen, windowed modes work fine. It NEVER did this before till the recent patch because I had set my resolution when I first installed the game at the beginning of February when I first started playing the game, then the March 5th patch comes up...BANG...I start getting the error.

How do I do that? I tried already and it said to many characters in the post and I don't see a file attach function.

Ok it says I can't post attachments so I can't post the DXDIAG.txt here but you can look at it HERE.

I saw this post somewhere else on this forum......hmm

    http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=133795

Possibly the problem? I didn't have an overheat problem but I will revert back to 196.21/34 beta anyway and try my luck.

Reverting back to 196.34 drivers seemed to have fixed the problem so it seems. That's actually a first I have seen or heard of NVIDIA ever recalling drivers for an issue, at least that I have heard anyway.

Actually Nvidia is reccomending folks roll back to the 196.21 drivers as the later drivers seem to have issues with a LOT of software (not just STO). That's why they recalled them (and no, it's not the first tiome Nvidia has recalled video drivers).

I have had no issues with previous beta drivers from NVIDIA, I was using them previously before with no problems at all. Just because M$ recommends you should use the WHQL drivers doesn't make it gold. You go ahead and use 196.21 I'll use 196.34 and call it that, each to his own.

If they have recalled drivers before I haven't heard of it, or they didn't make it publicly known. If they recommend people to rollback to 196.21 then they shouldn't have the beta drivers posted for public download.

I've got close to 35 or 40 games on here and I have NO troubles running beta drivers of any kind in fact I recommend it in certain cases.

I also get a D3D Error Message a lot, and thus crash at game startup, it might be related to Steam InGame Overlay Interface.
