I couldn't wait til I reached Captain to grab one of the Exploration Cruisers... only to discover that not only are they big compared to other ships when someone else has one, they are TOO BIG for me to use!
The ship takes up most of the display screen.
I've tried increasing resolution, hoping that the ship will become smaller, though it would make reading more difficult, but it didn't help. And, of course, things slowed down too.
I see I can change the Interface scale itself as well. But that doesn't change the ship size in front of me.
Is there a way to shrink the appearance of my ship so it doesn't get in the way, especially during space combat?
Again, changing overall resolution nor changing Interface Scale seems not to affect the ship in any helpful way.
Check you settings in game and make sure that the zoom is set properly. But from your pic, your camera is just zoomed in waaaaay to much. Zoom it out a little and you'll be fine.
EDIT: Marcus, I had to comment on your sig - I know ....

But what if I wanted to play ST/EVE? Can I play STEVE? Or what about STO/VE? Is STOVE an option?

how big is your monitor? what resolution are you using also?
Ok, no wheel on my trackball. Three buttons, but while the middle button sometimes acts as a wheel, it didn't in this case.
But, a single press of the page down key worked PERFECTLY! Thanks!
Oh, and monitor size? Uh, well, ya see, funny thing that. Being nearsighted, I'd always wanted a bigger monitor. Tax refund was nice this year, so, yeah, uh... computer connected to a 32" LCD TV through DVI to HDMI works great. Ahem.
You've heard the old saying that one's eyes are bigger than their stomach? Well, my eyes were just about bigger than my desk. Actually, my eyes had been looking at a 37" and a 42" TV. But looking at them all on display at HH Gregg, they really didn't look so big. Once I set up the 32" TV on my desk though, I relaized that I'd gotten lucky as it was almost too big for the desk space needed. I actually could have done better with a 25" - 30" TV.
It's also only a 60 Hz TV, which isn't a problem because with my vision problems, I don't notice the difference between 60 Hz and 120 Hz.
So, yeah, that monster sized starship on a 32" TV screen was REALLY BIG and annoying.
Thanks for the zoom out through the PgDn key. Very much appreciated.
I notice I have to roll over my mouse wheel several times before it responds in the slightest.
That Page Up/Down is handy to know, although it adjusts in large segments at a time.
If you look through the keybindings, there's unbound settings for smaller incremental zoom changes. I have mine set to shift+page up/down for fine tuning.

STOVE is in the kitchen and even comes with a realistic cooking craft!
Go with a Science Vessel. Its what I turned to when I made Captain and realized the Cruisers were just too damn cumbersome to use effectively even when trying to broadside.

How? I know about zooming on the map/minimap, but not forward display.
This is what it looks like even at 1920x1080 resolution:

And that's in open space, nothing next to me to cause that.
Thanks.

I see your problem - your ship is ugly.
