Launch STO with right click Run as administaor

Go into your games directory and look for log files that match the date and time stamp of the crashes. At the bottom of the log files will be date and time stamps (time in GMT, not local) - copy and post the lines that match the date and GMT time.

    My FAQ has some details

Any chance you are running the game from a network drive or another computer?
    H:/Program Files/Cryptic Studios

Its one of my storage drives, I have 3 harddrives, C being where windows is installed, D being a storage drive, and H being another storage drive, pretty much just bigger versions of thumb drives, except they don't move, thats the easiest way I can explain it

Sounds like you don't have rights to modify those files - they are reported as loicked or in use.

Did you try rebooting your computer, starting the game with right click Run as Administrator? (not to be confused with a Windows administrator log in).

I'm going to try rebooting right now, I may have forgotten to mention when it gets to that 22%(At which case I'm assuming you are correct that I cannot access the files), 6 command prompts pop up(as if I had loaded the commanded prop from start>run>cmd for half of a nano second for each screen at which point it crashes.

What security programs do you have running? Antivirus, antispyware, application firewall, etc

I'm not running any anti virus programs, I do not know my firewall settings(My father is our administrator, we run a home network compromised of 7 computers, one being a home server), it has never impeded my ability to update/play before. I use things such as hijack this, MBAM(Malware bytes-anti malware), and I used combofix a few a week or two ago, other than that nothing that runs in the background. I have just finished rebooting and am attempting to update once again I will let you know the results, thank you for bearing with me (:

A few more things to look at.

If you have Vista or Windows 7, it may not be happy with you having the STO directory in Program Files. For those OS versions it's best to have it in \Users\Public\Cryptic Studios. If you move the directory you'd need to modify the registry to reflect this change. If you don't know how to do that safely then uninstall and reinstall (installing not in Program Files this time).

I saw this line and the error.
100228 00:49:52 138 [1] ESC : The patchclientlib is internally recording error code : 36\nA file was locked that could not be open for writing. - Unable to read back file H:/Program Files/Cryptic Studios/Star Trek Online/Live/steam_api.dll!

Are you running Steam? If so close that first and run Star Trek Online.exe from the STO directory, not through Steam.

I'm running windows xp, I have steam on my computer but I don't run star trek online through it, and the 'program files' is pure 'aesthetic' so to speak, I created the folder myself in order to mantain order(like a C drive), it isn't technically a 'program files' folder on an operating system, more like a folder where I install my games to on the spare drives

Also make sure there aren't any files with .deleteme extensions in the STO folders. You may need to delete each file that the error log is saying is locked and let it patch.

If it won't let you delete those files through explorer try cut and paste them to a different directory (something not in STO) and try to patch again.

Make sure Star Trek Online.exe isn't running in task manager when you have the application closed.
