Ok, as a new player, I have absolutely no clue as to what is and is not junk.
Any way to tell as my inventory is almost full but im worried about selling something that could be useful.
Any ship based device (phasers, shields, engines) that do not have a colour, are junk, sell them. Same goes for "commodities". Anything that's got a name like "sample", is something used in crafting and should be stored away for use later. Anything that's got a colour and is a ship or ground device, if you dont need it, put it up on the exchange.
My definition of junk to throw out is stuff you don't want or have a use for that is least likely to be useful to others.
EG.
Low level Tribbles ( Dotson, Sparkes, Stahl, Thompson, Vitales, Susilo ) - Once you have one for each of your bridge officers you don't need any more unless you want to play the tribble breeding farm game
Food and Drink - This is a pure choice factor as they are useable by bridge officers and yourself as a quick heal between fights. But is a staple part of tribble breeding. So keep or sell on exchange.
Ship Consumables ( Batteries etc ) - If you don't think you will ever use them sell them on the replicator or vendor
Guns, Ship Parts - If you don't need them, sell these first on Exchange, if they don't sell after a try or two then vendor the white version and store the green and higher versions away for the moment. Who knows if you might decide to create an alt and wish you had that item again. Or it may sell later.
When selling white level items on the exchange you might want to see what the majority are selling the stuff for. Some items are used in the Memory Alpha crafting projects and thus could sell at a higher price. Similar to the food/drink and base tribble breed ( Tuffli ) or any of the other tribbles not mentioned above.
If they don't fall into those categories I would suggest selling at just under the value price as that way, even if its available on a vendor it's going to be cheaper than a vendor for people.
For colored items a search on the prices currently being sold at may give you an idea of what to sell it at. I usually sell those slightly over the asking price as they are either lootable only, upgradeable only or only buyable with badges.
Thats my take on the subject. I'm sure there will be more suggestions later.
Any ship based device (phasers, shields, engines) that do not have a colour, are junk, sell them.
Bad advice. White drops that are needed to unlock the T3 merchants in Memory Alpha are very valuable.
@OP
Check any white MK4 / MK6 drop if it can be used for Memory Alpha upgrading. Either use them for yourself to unlock the T3 merchants or sell them for insane high prices.
First, check out the Memory Alpha Thread, and get a list of the Weapons / Kits / Items you need to craft all the way to Tier Three (there are several posts I believe in the OP which great players have charted the items) - mark them down and check your list. Any you see hold on to.
Hint: Do your Tier One at least (5-6 MK III Ship Phasers and the minerals needed will open all Tier Two most times). Then if you just want to focus on key items for Tier Two or Three keep those items. Also, once you have those tiers open and you have what you want, you can sell additional items you get in the future for some extra credits (don't craft extras once you have yours - just sell them, others need them for crafting).
Items to keep: Tier Items, Minerals
---
Second, If your going to do special higher Tribbles, check out the Tribbles Thread and get the chart there for the foods needed, again done by some great players (like Xrystal in this case). Once you've decided what Tribbles you want to breed to get - make sure you keep those foods to breed and begin. Sell extra foods that are more rare once your breeding is done.
Hitns: Try to do a Tuffli, then the four tier two Tribbles of Henry, Jasperson, Mccarry and Nix. as soon as possible and spread them out amongst your crew for storage. Once you have these 5, you only need to focus on keeping 27 food in the bank for all other tiers. Even better if you can do tier three Deangelo, Cavallaro, Howe and Stacy then you only need to keep 18 foods)
Items to keep: Any Tribble above Tier Three and Foods, sell anything lower once you breed that high.
---
Third, if your making a 2nd - remember your first can provide many items to your second (and vice versa for more rare items in crafting or breeding) Mail yourself items you made for your second or mail items your first needs to get to just your address - @YourName
---
After that - its personal preference... if all your BOs have got Mk X Suits on and you get another and you don't need it, sell it. Check the Exchange Prices first to see what the going rate is. Remember your target audience - selling a MK IV Pistol for 300,000 will never move because at LtC you didn't have 300,000 creds, so it will never sell (and its rare anyone is foolish enough to buy at that price - someone will always be lower than you and move theirs faster).
Sould you luck out on the truly rare item, go for it (remembering asking something silly like 20,000,000 isn't going to move... like ever...). But also remember - if its that rare, you may just want it for yourself
Bad advice. White drops that are needed to unlock the T3 merchants in Memory Alpha are very valuable.
@OP

There are also some Mk III kits that can be traded at Memory Alpha for Mk IV kits. However, those kits are exactly the same as the kits you can get from trading exploration badges.

It's not crafting, it's trading. And yes, it's pretty much unneeded as the few items you can get at Memory Alpha that are better than what you can get elsewhere are only marginally better.
Actually Even Level white items sell in the market well, they have the advantage of being able to be sold, used and resold when done. Green's are only 2% better and cannot be resold once used, so for all but Mk X, uncommons sell about the same price as commons.
I will stick with what I know:
- Beams (only even levels, most odd levels are junk)
Disruptors, junk, Vendor them unless rare or better
Phasers, Commons sell for about list price, Rares for a premium
Plasma, MK IV and VI sell for 50K and 100K VIII and higher not so much but worth selling in Exchange
Tetryon's, Mk VIII and X are worth 100K+, even white ones
Polaron's, Mk VIII and X sell well at 100K and 200K
- Turrets, Mk X's sell for big premium (except Disruptor's)
Disruptors, junk, Vendor them unless rare or better
Phaser, sell well all versions IV's about 20K, VI
Plasma, MK IV sell for 20K and 80K for VI, VIII and X
Tetryon's, Mk VIII and X are worth somthing if market not floode
Polaron's, Mk VIII and X sell well at 50K and 200K
- Engines: Sell everything under Mk VIII to vendor, thats about all you will get in Exchange.
Exception Very Rares, they will sell.
- Ship Shields: Sell everything under Mk X to vendor, thats about all you will get in Exchange.
Exception Very Rares, they will sell.
- Foods:
Romulan Ale, Klingon Octopus, Klingon Gladst, Romulan Jumbo Mollusk, Sell for about 40-50K
Cardasian ???? Egg, Tranya Jullibery Wine, and Heart of Targ sell fro 100K-200K sometimes more
- Tribbles, don't even bother with these unless you read all the farming guide, the ones you find and accidently breed in your pack are not going to sell, even for a single credit. It takes until 5th gereration of careful breeding to get get valuable one. (however some that breed off the best buy one are worth about 500-1000 credits if they are not healing tribbles.
- Data Samples: red one, near worthless, about 10 credits each. Higher level ones however are more. cyan ones about 100, green and above about 1000. but this market is highly volitile. There often is major dips in prices, where no one in buying.
- batteries are selling now, about 1K per 5 for shield and weapon batteries. I don't mess with aux or engine batteries, but since auto-stacking more people are using them, they use to sell for vendor resale price.
On Odd level items, generally if it odd level, and you can use it do, otherwise sell it to a vendor. In turn, it you want to try out a new weapon type, picking up an odd level in market can be a cheap trial. SOme cases the different is extreme. for example Mk VIII Tetryon Beam will set you back about 200K, a VII can be pickup up for 20K, if you get a common one, you likely can resell it for close to what you paid.
Also you can can upgrade often to next high odd level item for the resale value of the lower even one (assuming common items). Mk II's sell for more than Mk III, Mk IV's more than V's, VI's more than VII's and VIII's usually far more than IX's. so upon rank promotions, you can often upgrade equipment and make credits in the process.
I personally use only purchase common items, except for odd BoE drops and mission rewards that are BoA. Simple so I can resell them, the 4% extra is not binding to me and loosing ability to resell.
To tell you the truth, most items in this game are junk. I do not know how many times I got something and thought, 'That might be useful latter on', only to end up never using that item. You either find a higher level of that item or it really wasnt as useful as you though it would be.
Dont sell any white stuff ships weapons or devices that end in Mk VI. It will save you a ton of money if you craft.
And right click on tribbles. Go to info on them to find if they are a special tribble.

Everything in this post is In my Experience. Any Ship Shield, Deflector, or Engine thats not at least blue (and even then, a lot of Blue versions of those are quest rewards), do not make you more money than the vendor since the supply on those is so great. Almost no ground item sells well for me on the exchange.
What does sell well are Ship Weapons of Green quality or better (especially in the higher marks), Ship Consoles of Green or Better, and Rare Ship consoles that are white or better (Like Biofunction Monitors and EPS Regulators).
If you plan to sell something on the exchange, just first look it up and see what the prices are like, and then undercut them. If the prices are really high and nothing lower, you will sell it and make a good profit. It there are at least a few around the vendor value of the item, its probably not worth it.
you may want to look on the exchange to see what an item is going for, some items are valuable as they might be needed for something else..not a bad idea to learn what and what isnt valuable
My personal definition of junk is anything that won't sell on the exchange for its listed worth.
Good point.
One has to keep in mind, Merchants will sometimes inflate prices for personal gain and Crash prices for odd reasons.
I was actually oddly surprised to see disruptor beam arrays in the uncommon form crash for Captain and Rear admiral, the crash seems to be coming from the Klingon side, oddlyy enough, they are crying about the few feds now using the weapons right back on them.... Guess they could have chosen to dump a lesser weapon type.
Latest to suffer a crash are Covariant shields (rare) directly related to the over inflation of the Data prices, in particular Plas samp and Unid Subst.
There was also a dumping bout on the common Covariant shield array mk IV (common) just starting to recover along with the Personal shield mk IV and VI.
Once thing I can say for certain, prices will fall and fall till the market becomes Saturated to the point where merchants are no longer needed, that is without any kind of intervention or news.
Any ship based device (phasers, shields, engines) that do not have a colour, are junk, sell them. Same goes for "commodities".

Taspar...Cardassian Taspar Eggs.... I remember the first time I ate a live taspar. I was six years old and living on the streets of Boston. There was a band of children, four, five... six years old - some even smaller, desperately trying to survive. We were thin, scrawny little animals, constantly hungry, always cold. We slept together in doorways like packs of wild gettles for warmth. Once I found a nest... taspars had made and built in the eave of a burned-out building. And I found three eggs in it. It was like finding treasure. I cracked one open on the spot and ate it. I planned to save the other two. They would keep me alive for another week. Of course, an older boy saw them and wanted them. And he got them. But he had to break my arm to do it.

Thus far, not a whole lot has dropped. I assume there will be something Green or Purple eventually as I level.
