server not responding -- still

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Hi All,
When playing i log in and within a few minutes i will get, 'server not responding'.
Sometimes i can play around it, mostly not.

I just assummed it was a problem with the game and waited for it to be fixed. A month in and ts still a problem. I have checked with other players though and most are not getting this issue any more.

My internet connection is an ADSL2+ link, capable of over 1100kbytes a sec (ie over a meb a sec). Latency shouldn't be a problem and i have no outgong blocked ports that i know of.

Nettest tool returned the following,
unable to allocate performance buffer

Youre getting that problem because something on your system/ISP is blocking the majoirty of the connection.

try connecting to the game via the launcher proxy, and make sure you have disabled/uninstalled all firewalls/antivirus software you have.

And why you've pinged google, when you are having problems with STO (which is on a totally different servernetwork/port range(, is unknown. Especially because youa re pinging random websites and not cryptics game servers.

I assume from your localized version of your Operating System (missing 2nd and third column of nettest) and your pings to AU sites you are in or near AU.

Since the servers are located in Boston, MA, USA you will have latency to match the distance between you and the servers.

You'll need to determine how much packet loss and or how much dynamic port blocking you are getting between you and the STO servers. Using netstat - n from a command prompt, while you are still in STO, find out the 208.95.18x.TRIBBLE server IP and TCP 7xxx port you are getting disconnects on.

With that information run a Ping Plotter trace with that same TCP 7xxx port (not ICMP) to the same server IP.

Details on those tools and installation are in my FAQ.

Nettest is a good step in testing, but it is limited to the one destination server IP and more importantly to just a few TCP ports. Unless you are patching on TCP 7255 you are more than likely using a different port (TCP 7004 or 7228 for example) in game.

Before you go to sol, in your video options, turn world detail to 0%. Once youve loaded up, turn it back to 100% or whatever it was at

Well, i was hoping for the best and i did get a few hours of play time in today. which is the best its been.
I still get 'server not responding' quite regularly and Sol is just impossible. I haven't made in back inside the earthdock as i dget disconnected prior.

Ping Plotter Details while at Sol,
    Port was 7022 or 7064.

Now, a ping to 208.95.184.74 taking 280ms isn't great but shouldn't be the cause of any drop outs in the game. No packets are being lost.
Just so i've covered everything video quality settngs are at minimal levels.

f i can take sometthing to my ISP outlining the issue I will, but i have to know the problem is with the route and not with my connection or end-point.

To answer some questions you'll properly ask.

Was this during your disconnect problem to the said server IP and TCP port? I assume it was, but just checking to make sure.

RealtekRYL8168B/8111B Family PCI-E Ggabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0), notced i had an old driver. updated to latest.

Good, there are some known issues with Windows 7 64 bit and Realtek older drivers.
Are you using a proxy in the launcher options and if so which proxy is selected
    No.

You might want to try US and or EU proxy to see if it changes anything in game for you. If you get the same results with each try, switch back to none.

the ping plot was from the period in which there was disconnections.
Latest driver only just installed. Will test tomorrow along with the proxies.

will keep you updated on progress.

Thanks for all your time. Would love to be able to play without these disconnections/messages.
