NVidia 196.75 Reportedly may cause Overheating

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
NVidia has reported that the latest 196.75 Drivers may be causing overheating on some computers. This was first reported by StarCraft II Beta testers, and Blizzard found that the problem was the drivers not running the Fans properly during games. They have contacted NVidia who issued a statement.

NVidia has pulled the drivers from their Website and recommends people stay with or roll back to the 196.21 drivers:
We are aware that some customers have reported fan speed issues with the latest 196.75 WHQL drivers on NVIDIA.com. Until we can verify and root cause this issue, we recommend that customers stay with, or return to 196.21 WHQL drivers. Release 196.75 drivers have been temporarily removed from our Web site in the meantime.

Hmmm.. now this is odd indeed. I've always said cryptic had bad coding because their game started overheating cards (which has never happened before). If the manufacturers are to blame.... that's a different problem altogether. Sad, sad sign of things to come?

Why is it a sign of things to come?

This would not be the 1st program not to run well on new drivers.

The 196.75 driver is just out the door,I still use the "old" 195 driver and never had a problem with the game.

The only complaint I have had was the warning Cryptic issued if you did use "older" drivers.

In all honesty if you have a problem with the game using a driver between 191 and 195 then try other drivers,if this does not work then check your system and the game settings.

I simply meant 'bad things to come' from manufacturing companies... the last few years have been plagued with poor manufacturing (specifically the faulty nvidia capacitor issues). Hardware is getting more and more advanced, if manufacturing standards don't increase at the same pace, it's gonna mean bad hardware/support software.

I know were talking about drivers... still.

The game runs great on my GTX260. Havn't had any issues.

In truth, NVidia has had a lot of problems of late. But ATI was the one with the bad reputation for years. So its really not clear which way to go these days. Competition is normaly a good thing, but I think lately they are both in such a rush to beat the other that sometimes things don't get QA'd as well as they should before releasing.

I've been using the 196.21 drivers for awhile now, and have been very happy with them for every game I play (which is a bunch of games!)

Keep in mind that ATI is now owned by AMD and they DO have a good reputation. I have yet to have any reason to cry about anything AMD has made.

Also With AMD at the head of ATI, they are putting the whole AMD idea of less clock speed better design to the newer 4 and 5 HD cards. I've had several friends run them and they tell me they are REALLY good.
