I have been searching the forums since the STF mission "Infected" was released and I have found a few answers to the question I have, but not all. I am wondering if the community and any Dev member would be able to help me with these questions.
To start before STO I used to play WOW, and I understand the trinity (Tank/Healer/DPS). I know that in WOW to do an instance/raid you would have to have a certain number of each role, (i.e. 5 man = 1 tank, 3 DPS, 1 Healer). My questions reguarding the STF's mainly deal with that.
Here are my questions (Some questions are dependant on the answers of others):
1. In the space combat portions, do Crusiers = Tanks , Escorts = DPS, and Science Ships = Healers?
1a. Does your choice in Officer type (Tac,Eng, Sci) have to match a specific ship, to preform the roles above( i.e. Tac + Esc = DPS, Eng + Cru = Tank, Sci + Sci = Healer)? For example, If I am Tactical Officer and I choose a Crusier but I want to Tank, can I? or If I want to DPS in a Crusier, is it possible? Another example would be if I am an Engineering Officer and I choose an Escort, would I be able to DPS? I think the over arching question would be Can I mix and match Officer/Ship and still preform the role (tank/dps/Heals)?
1b. In the space combat portions, do you have to have: 1 Crusier (Tank), 3 Escorts (DPS), and 1Science Ship (Healer)?
1c. In the space combat porotins, when it comes to ship/roles, will a group not be able to complete the STF's if you have a group that has a mix of ship/roles(I.e. Tac + Cru = Tank, Eng + Esc = Dps, or Sci + Cru = Heals
2. In the ground combat portions, is a Tactical = DPS,* Engineer = Tank, Science = Healer?
2a. Are there specific items ( armor/kits) that an Engieer would have that would allow him to tank, Tactical Office to Dps, or Science Officer to heal?
2b. Can a Tactical Officer do the job of a tank, or an Engineering Officer do the job of a DPS if they wanted to?
2c. To performe well in the STF's do you have to have 3 Tactical Officers as DPS, 1 Engineering Officer as Tank, and 1 Science Officer as Healer? Also do you have to have the group makeup of 3 Dps, 1 Tank, and 1 Heals?
Those are all the questions that I have, I just want to say thank you very much in advance to both the community and to any dev for any Information given, all is appreciated.
Unlike WoW, there are no set roles in STO. You may be 'Tanking' and find no one is shooting at you. You can quickly change to either 'Healer' or 'DPS' as the situation warrents.
One thing about STO is it will keep you on your toes switching from one role to another as the combat flows.

That is what I have been thinking, but after reading alot of posts say otherwise that is what is confusing me. I have been hearing that for the STF Mission that was just released, you would have to have a group makeup like comprising of a Tank( Engineering Officer + Cruiser), Healer (Science Officer + Science Ship), and the rest DPS (Tactical Officer + Escort), and that is why I had those questions In my original post.
I would love to hear from people who have done the STF with a not traditional group make up, atleaat to know that it is doable.
1. Tank = person who does the most DPS (ship independent) Healer = who has the team support skills DPS = a ship that has max damage configuration.
1a. Question does not apply seeing the trinity is very loosely defined in this game.
1b. Nope, you can go all Cruisers if you wanted.
1c. Nope, you function as a team and work toward the goal. Everyone supports everyone and the team shares tanking due to lack of Aggro control tools in space.
2. This is a little more defined than space. Tac = DPS/Tank Eng = Support/DPS Science = Support/Debuff
2.a The kit loosely defines what role you will play. For instance, if I have a CCB tac kit, I can pull easier in the raid because of motion accelerator. A science guy with a geological type kit would be a control/debuffer. An Engineer with a bunker fab kit would be a strong support team member. If the engineer swaps to say a Explosives type kit, they become more DPS than Support. If the Science guy pops on a different kit he may become more of a hybrid healer/debuffer.
2b. See answer to 2a.
2c. The STF requires support and DPS yes. I have heard of some teams beating it without heals. I believe they used stimpacks. Most teams go in with a Healer. I think the most effective team would have 3 people focused on DPS and 2 focused on keeping the team going with heals, support, and debuffs.

In the end, find something that works and use it.
Um, typically, a Tank isn't the person doing the most damage. They're the ones who can TAKE the most damage (most survivable) and draw aggro.
The reason I was some what worried when I started reading the different posts on this topic was for the fact that I choose Tac but I like the Cruiser, and my friend who I will mostly play with choose Eng (because he is an Eng in deal life ),but choose an escort, and we want to be able to do the STF's either by pug or with fleet.
We just don't want to worry about being in the middle of an STF and just failing badly because I am(tac) not dpsing and my friend(eng) not tanking or having people leave or not group up because, "Tac + Cruiser... Noon" mentality.
Also, I do remember not hearing alot about having to have the tank/dps/heals like other mmo's but could be completly wrong.
