Since the last patch I can't log into any character in star base 1, I get error:
fatal error: Error decompressiong data. Verifing Files in the launcher may fix this issue.
Technical Details: ./piggs/texture2.hogg:
Texture_Library/Environment/1_Interior_Kits/Stf_Ship/Stf_Paneling_Wires_01_Ns.Wtex: Error

system specs:
cpu: i7 920
OS: windows 7 64bit
memory: 12gb
Video card: ati 4850 x2 crossfire.
worked fine until today. Multiple alts. One alt was able to load into space but all on starbase 1 can't sign in.
Getting exact same Fatal Error crash. And it is in the Texture3 file for me. And it happens at different times. Sometimes during login, right after login, most times login and get to game screen and it happens at varying times. But never more than more than 5 minutes after login. Did complete uninstall/reinstall. Same thing

Delete the texture2.hogg file (or rename it if you wish), let it patch again.
I have deleted teh file in question several times and repatched /force verify. Patching does not recover the file. And Verify does not affect it either
i7 920 is not currently over clocked. I have over clocked it in the past up to 3.2ghz on air, but I really don't need it and it costs more to run over clocked. I get more than 100fps in most games and can play sto with all settings to max with no slow downs. Only setting I don't use is dynamic lighting because that causes unexplained crashes on the ground. I assume this last patch broke another fx in this game.
Something to try: Move all the .hogg files from piggs/ to prepatch/piggs/ (overwrite what is already in the prepatch/piggs/ folder) and try patching up.
Curious if that resolves your issue if deleting the file doesn't fix it.

Just to verify:
You did or did not wait an hour+ to download the new hogg file? (cable connections will go signifcantly faster... I'm on DSL so...)
Another thing to consider: Are you the administrator on the PC or do you have a sub account?
I get this too, I've gotten it since closed beta. I have OC'd my machine but lowered the clock since then (AMD 720BE, 4th core unlocked, 15x multi at 1.425v).
Anyone else do this but not have problems? Like the OP I have two ATI cards xfired (4830s here). I don't know if the root cause is that, or the new 4 gigs of memory, or what. Every other game local or online runs fine, all day. The memory passed MemTest 86 and the Windows memory test.
I do know that constantly re-downloading 1-2 GIGS of data each session is not the answer. Dynamic lighting being an issue is new to me, I'll turn that off. Lately, it seems to only crash when I'm transferring from space to ground.
I think that's key, 90% of the CTDs happen when I'm transferring from space to ground, especially when it's a ground map I haven't been on before, ever. Could it be a timing issue between the HDD, memory, and CPU?
I just got it tonight on my ground mission at the Malon System everytime I engage in ground battle it just crashes. Tried moving the .piggs files to prepatch/piggs and it still did not work.
Anyone know what's going on?

I am having the same problem, except mine is right after character creation, in /piggs/texture.hogg, Texture_Library/Space/Planets/Planet_Class/Planet_Class_H_03a_m.Wtex - I can create the character but I can't get into the game to play it.
This is awful. My system isn't a bad one as such, Win7, 3GB RAM, Nvidia 9500GT, I think I should be able to play the game after purchasing it and spending hours download the patch...
I haveing those same problems with fatal error: decompresing data but it is randomly accout in ground and space mode. I try ewerithing and it is still crashing 5 - 10 times per hour. It is very anoying.

Let it run through its rounds and sees what it can find.
It sounds like something server side with the last patch.
Now granted my client isn't pulling the same error, but.. I wonder...
Can you discribe at what point you have the error you had? Like at what stage in the login?
