How can you tell you are getting hit by Feedback Pulse?

I looked in my combat log after a fight where I did very poorly, and saw that I was getting riddled by feedback pulse. How can I tell this is occuring? I am sure the little tags under my target will tell, but I can't see those during a fight. What visual effect should I be looking for on the target or on myslef?

generally blue pulses almost like tetryon cannon shots hitting you, other than that the enemy ship seems to be coated in a tight blue shield

Yeah! I saw those and did not make the connection - Thanks!

I guess the only recourse is to pick another target until his FBP expires, or use non-beam weapons?

    Depends.

In PVP, yes, choose a different target/use cannon weapons.
In PVE, many times you'll be faced with Cardassian Galors as your only target, so you've got 3 choices: use cannons, stop firing until the effect expires, or just keep shooting your beam weapons, (my personal choice, I just activate Hazard Emitters to counter the feedback damage).

PVE Feedback Pulse is generally weak enough that you can just burn through it and survive, whereas PVP Feedback will almost definitely kill you if you're a heavy beam user.
