3 total. I believe you get two by default and once you reach level 6 for the first time you unlock the 3rd slot so you can make a Klingon. I don't think you have to make a Klingon so you could just make 3 Fed characters if you want.
So does that mean I can have 3 from the Federation and 3 from the KDF, for a total of 6. Or is it just 3 total?
It's three total. The amount of information stored per-character is, supposedly, significantly higher then in other games, necessitating lower numbers of slots.
Or, that's the dev's current weigh-in on the matter, and given how much information is stored per-character (individual character appearance data, ship appearance data for up to 6-8 ships, appearance data for up to 10 officers, equipment and skills for all of the above, personal inventory and bank, etc.) they may be right on just how much TRIBBLE is stored per character slot.
Whether that justifies the current number of slots, is hotly debated, however, and not the point of my post. Just giving all of the information on the subject that I can.
Yes how dare Cryptic try to make money so they can pay their employees, pay their bills and make a profit! They should be doing it for free, for the good of the people! All hail communism!!
Eh... I think it might be a little of both. I dont fault them for wanting to make money, but I also know we dont know the entirety of the back-end of STO. So the daabase reason might be the reason too.
Having customized hundreds of options when creating my character, I'd buy the reason given by Cryptic as to why we can only have 3 slots. You all are also missing the fact that an employee already has come out and stated they are working on options to store characters easier and if they can accomplish that, will expand everyone's slots for free.
Honestly, without a lot of data to disprove Cryptic's story on the matter, I don't think we can conclusively say that it's for reason A, or B. Which also means we don't have any information to prove their case either.
However, I can say that speculative statements made about a decision that's clearly not exactly popular are just plain silly. Sour grapes, mate.

That, I didn't know, and I'm sure they can optimize it. Especially with it being such a hot-button topic that may actually cost them subscribers (Atari Marketing pressure - one of the most feared things in the gaming universe). Though, it's certainly up to speculation on whether or not we're getting the amount of slots we could reasonably get away with, either (a conspiracy theory I personally support, but not one that I'm going to get upset over).
I'm not sure why everyone is so upset about this. i remember back in Star Wars Galaxies, unless you unlocked Jedi, the only way to get a second character slot was to buy a second account. It took SOE years to give everyone a second character slot.

just 3 total (5 if your lucky and got the pre-order year/life deal). More will be available at sometime in C-Store for extra money.
