So I was browsing amazon today and saw there was a star trek online novel coming in march 2010, the novel is titled the needs of the many and may be an attempt to iron out more details left open on the segment to 2409? I plan on getting the book just was wondering if anyone else had thughts or if they were going to release content and a few surprises around the launch of the novel?

That is a very cool discovery! I had not previously heard news of this. I'll keep my eyes open.

Kestrel, the Dev and Story Writer for STO had been mentioning this previous to game launch. I may be not be remembering correctly, but I am fairly certain that she is either a friend of the writer or doing some collaboration (if not both). It should play into parts of the story from the game, I would imagine.

I hope it does better than the SWG novel.

The book is written by Michael A. Martin, who writes an excellent older Jake Sisko. It's not going to be a traditional novel per se. Instead it will be comprised of various interviews of individuals by Jake Sisko, delving into the events leading up the the current crisis engulfing the Alpha and Beta quadrants. If you have read 'World War Z' by Max Brooks (and really you should) its very much in the style of that book.

"Needs of the Many" was written by Michael A. Martin (and I think he did a fabulous job).

He had access to all of my notes and background information, and we were in regular contact throughout the writing and editing of the novel.

Personally, I'd like to see it be the first of a many STO novels and short story collections. If that ever happened, would you want to see more information about the past or something set in the current timeline of the story that advances the plot?

I'd enjoy both but would like to see something from the past first. I'd like to learn more about how we got to where we are now.

Personally, the main thing for me is that the continuity is maintained. If the game has established X then the books should maintain X and not declare X to be invalid in favor of Y. That said, it's always easier to maintain continuity moving forward (because the future is unwritten) then it is writing about the past.

However, if your description of the writing process were to hold up (close collaboration between STO story writers and book writers) then 'historical fiction' can be written well with an eye for continuity.

As long as they are good reads, I'd actually prefer to see both, and include stories that are pretty much unrelated to the main story line. I'd really like to think that we're not the only ones out there exploring, and I'm pretty sure some of what we would consider mundane stuff has a good story to tell.

For example, the first mission we all run out of the gate: SS Azura. How the captain got the ship, some of the runs it's done, and how it got to be in the situation we bail it out from would be a good read in the right hands. Heck, even devote a chapter to the mission we run on the Azura.

I'd like to see Akari's story 'Tension' put in a collection. It's in 10 forward if you haven't read it. Anyways, past, future, current and alternate timeline stories are fine by me as long as they're well written.

    Um. YES. :D

(And to make it clear: all of the above; past, present, and plot advancements.)

Oooh eventually I'd like to see a novel focusing on the Gorn or the Orion Syndicate, the inner workings of their cultures... or how they feel living under Klingon subjugation... they seem so important to trek lore and yet so often overlooked..

Anyhoo... had my pre-order in for 'Needs of the Many' for quite some time now.. ^_^

Short story collections are actually a good idea.

Ideally you might take a character like Drake with an established (and memorable) game presence and make a short story about them - and then introduce a new in-game mission that references that story (but done it such a way that someone that hasn't read the story would also get the gist of it).

An interesting recent example of that sort of idea was with the "Mass Effect Galaxy" iPhone game. It gave a short side story relating to what two of a the characters were doing before Mass Effect 2 --- then that story is referenced 3 or 4 times within Mass Effect 2 itself while talking to the characters involved. But, again, done in such a way that you don't feel like you're missing out if you haven't played Galaxy (and giving a slight expansion of the story for those that had).

I'd really love to see, as a preference, more stuff about what lead up to the current date. There's tons of hints here and there in various missions, and I think it'd be even better to see these things evolve and take shape from a different perspective (rather then just from Starfleet's - particularly some of the missions in the Iota Pavonis sector block, or some of the Klingon Defense Force happenings).

Keep up the good work - you've got me riveted and excited about future missions as it is. o7

I'll probably buy every book you will release. I hope they'll be available in e-book format at some point because it would be easier for non-us resident to get them that way.

This sounds interesting, I'll have to watch for it.

I liked the SWG book, It even gave me ideas to go explore areas i'd never heard of. I hope the STO Book provides info based on the game that can be used in a simular fashion. Not looking for plot spoilers, but just some references to minor places that i can check out in game.

Well, I am disapointed with what cryptic did with the "path" series, I am having a hard time putting down 10 dollars for this book.
When was it decided to make a book?
When was it decided to not continue the path series? You can say "not enough manpower" like you said before Xmas, but you have to understand it seems suspect.
Was the decision to write a book and end the path series decided at the same time?

I am having a hard time beleiving you will make any profit on this decision.

I'd like to see both; and I'd like to see you write something longer than your in-game work, such as a novella or novelette if you aren't ready to take the plunge of a novel.

I'd like to see a little of both, as well as a third option, stuff that fleshes out the story arcs happening in game etc. maybe even a novel based around an episode series, sure it'd require you to declare a certin ship and crew the "canon" one, but you could even make that a contest, perhaps offering the position to the winner of a "writeing contest" providieing a biography for your captain, crew and ship

Say some of the guys and gals out there in the STO universe are creativly inclined and would want to write a short story based on their exploits with in the game. Would cryptic concider a section on the website for such submissions?

    Just an idea :)

User submitted short storys could even be used to compile short story novel or even to add to the cannon storyline/history of the Star Trek universe (afterall starfleet is susposed to be massive). If enough interesting strories come to the for, a competion could be run with say a lifetime membership as the prize to cmplie the book.
