Like the title says. It does not matter what is in the instance. Could be nothing could be full of stuff like asteroids. I can get into one with tons of asteroids, ships..... and it runs fine then get into one with nothing and it is choppy as all heck. It can work the other way around also. Makes no sense. I am way above what the game calls for as far as graphics, memory, internet and such.
I don't really have any ideas, but I'd like to confirm that you're not the only person experiencing this somewhat random and odd graphical bug. I get it in about 1 out of 10 maps. Like you said, doesn't actually seem to matter what is in the system - I've had it happen in at least one zone that was completely empty (sans a planet... maybe it's an atmospheric effect?)
Happens to me too, infact it makes my battles three times longer because i cant concentrate on my target! (Stupid cardassians). Anyway i have noticed while, it happens in any map at any random time, it does happen more often than not in maps with clouds and/or debris. I don't know if this is because MOST of the systems have stuff in them (which strikes me as odd, i would assume most planets with life wouldnt have any solar system hazards), or what.
I notice this problem in other games as well which may lead me to believe it is a graphics card issue with particles. Usually in games with clouds or smoke, it puts a strain on the card and the CPU. This happens because it would be like you trying to watch tens of thousands of flies at the same time as you draw each individual one in real time to make a flipbook as it happens.
.....but thats just my thought.
on the other hand , however, it could not be graphical, because it doesnt matter the video setting. High or low, its choppy.
Saddly i too have this problem it seems that is it is in the asteriods or nebulea or anything with alot of detail an clutter; I am running my GFX card with up to date drivers an i dont get this problem in wow with massive battles they have to me its got be comming from the STO's side i have sent numerous tickets in with really no explanation on how to fix it.
Yes battels are a pain an PvP is a joke i must be the most easiest person to take down as i must appear to sit there b4 i can shoot. ( silly noob cant find his fire button ).
If a dev does see this are there any tips you can offer for us poor starfleet officers who seem to be in a 2 dimensional game.
I would also like to note that I always find lag and stutter more on higher levels then on starter. The difference is noticed once I jump from tier 1 ship.
From that I conclude its a combination of map and inetrface/added skill display issue perhaps?
I would like to add a "Me Too". Some instances (for example Star Base 24) run fine with 100+ ships in the instance.... (AI and player).... but some instances with just my ship and 3 enemy run slow as mud (laggy/choppy). I notice it more in Nebula instances where your ship has to travel through nebula gas as it curls around your ship.
I play with a Intel Core2Duo (oc'ed to 3.1Ghz), eVGA 680i mobo, 2 GB DDR800 RAM, 2x 8800GTs in SLI, WinXp32bit.
ive noticed this happenns when there is increased clutter AND certain color backgrounds in space (more greenish than blue nebulae in the background)........
im wondering if some graphics cards have a hard time with different color hues while drawing a bunch of objects? or maybe an opitcal illusion on our part.
I've had this problem too. At first I thought it was the background as well but now I'm not sure. I tried turning down the settings to below recommended but that doesn't solve the problem despite the fact that the ships and background are "less complicated"

Any ideas?
For me it only happens during combat sequences and seens to be more frequent today than it has been. Makes combat almost impossible.
I do remember having a similar problem with other games online, it could be a multitude of things like just the fact that the game servers cant upload fast enough or your modem/router cant download the information enough. I would like some sort of offical response from cryptic though. Anyone get one?
My space instances are actually pretty smooth; the problems I have most with are ground missions -- the ground missions are terribly laggy and choppy, in some cases completely impossible to use. I've had to abandon ground missions because of the terrible lag. Even space station visits are pretty laggy for me.

Turn shadows off in the in-game video settings. If that helps start increasing shadows until it gets laggy again, then turn it back down to where it runs smooth again.
In the Travis System i have this really choppy problem, and its only Empok Nor in the system with a blue-green background with not much color. Why would it be choppy in an empty system with a few ships and one station? Other missions i have trouble on are in systems with clutter, while i do have almost an even number of smooth gameplay time in similarly cluttered systems.
Doesn't really matter anyway, i can hardly play because i get disconnected every other time i load a map.
In some instances Cryptic seem to have used the age-old art of texturing world geometry with a translucent unsolid texture to give the rays of light effect around light sources, unfortunatly this seems to cripple even the best of computers.
I first noticed this in Sol, after running through the stateroom, there are two lights above the doorway under the stairwell, I have run through here many times and never once seen these lighting effects, this time however they were there and boy did they cripple my computer. No graphics settings were changed, and logging off and back on removed these, since then I have noticed them in a few other places and they always really hurt system performance, sometimes these are hard to see especially in space, but logging off/restarting the client always seems to fix this.
I could find no option in the graphics settings to disable these, they seem to be forced "on" during loading of some instances, I assume it is a bug.
FYI Cryptic this effect is terrible, very few modern games use this kind of lazy level design, it went the way of... Sprites, Oh my god Cryptic the Sprites!

I'll start, but I only have two main systems commited to memory... the rest have been exploration zones.

Is there anything on the graphical options that would disable those from displaying in the first place?
