Server times out while loading 'Maps'

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
This is happening far too often.usually following a patch download. I log in, d/l the patch, choose and activate my character and then get booted while 'retrieving list of maps'. I'm putting this here as I have yet to be able to submit a ticket to tech support from outside the game!!!!!. as the 'Submit/review' window in my account area seems to be inactive.:mad:

i get the red letters "server not responding" frequently when going to a new area or ground mission or back to space. BUT it then continues after a few more seconds.

Yep have had that too, and it's not a problem. What happens here is that I get booted back to the log-in page.

Try connecting via one of the proxies, located under options in your game launcher.

Same thing happens to me as well. I wonder how long we have to endure this until Cryptic does something about their servers.

Accusation without proof rarely, if ever obtains results. If it was cryptics servers then everyone would have these problems. Theyre not. Which leads us to believe it is either a routing issue, or more likely a problem with the users connection. Be it a problem with their network setup, or their ISP.

My setup is really reliable. I never had any problems when I played World of Warcraft.

WoW uses different ports for connectivity.

I agree with Jonathan on this one. I've got the same problem. It was working fine for about 2-3 weeks or so. Now I can t even log on anymore. Been trying to get some game time for a week now. Without any success. Tried all sorts of things to see if the issue is on my side or Cryptics... haven t found any on my side, yet.

Switching to the EU proxy pretty much fixed the 'problem' for me. Thanks. :)

Hi,.. here's a brief log. I usually don t get past the (retrieving maps) screen.

    SERVER STATUS: GREEN
Location: Central Europe, Luxembourg / Speed: 8.08 Mbps / ping: 39ms / 0% packet loss
26th FEB, 27th FEB + 28th FEB: Unable to login
3th March : Unable to connect
4th March 13:15 GMT: can't log on (stuck at retrieving maps screen)
4th March 14:40 GMT: still can't log on (stuck at retrieving maps screen)
4th March 16:35 GMT: took three attempts to log on.. unable to play due to ''server not responding''
5th March 06:45 GMT: can't log on (stuck at retrieving maps screen)
5th March 08:20 GMT: took several attempts to login to end up with ''server not responding'' in-game.
5th March 13:30 GMT: 2x attempts to log on. Was logged in for 30 sec.. then ''server not responding'' - disconnected
5th March 15:16 GMT: connecting to the login server timed out
6th March 11:55 GMT: 2x attempts to logon - server not responding (disconnected after 1 min in game)
6th March 13:05 GMT: 2x attempts to logon - server not responding (disconnected after 1 min in game)
6th March 14:30 GMT: unable to connect to login server

The weeks before it worked fine and now haven t been able to play since. Changing to EU proxy didn t resolve issue either.

Run STO in window mode, have a command prompt open and type netstat - n when you are getting that error.

Find the 208.95.18x.TRIBBLE:7xxx IP and port information, try to telnet 208.95.18x.TRIBBLE 7xxx and see if you get an error message back from that IP and port.

Another way to do this is to download the Microsoft TCPView program and have it always on top, it will show you the process, server, and port your are connecting on in real time. I tell people to use netstat -n because they already have it on their system.

Here is my example when I am retrieving maps and enter character choice screen

    GameClient.exe:3112 TCP mysystem.here.com.:49545 208.95.184.134:7001 ESTABLISHED

    Thanks for your help.
Telnet gives me the following error: Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed

PS: now that i m in window mode when launching STO I ve noticed that my internet drops from time to time. All drivers are updated from the manufactures website. I find it weird that it always used to work and just stopped working all of a sudden. No new hardware changes on my side.

    Thanks again!

OK the telnet port 23 means you didn't use a port option - 'Telnet 208.95.184.74 7004' as an example

Good info on the internet dropping, your modem may be crashing or freezing due to small packets. That is really important for us to troubleshoot. :)

What you can do is change the LAN interface on your modem/router to 10 FULL or your PC network adapter to 10 FULL (from auto).

If you have wireless change your router / modem wireless speed to 802.11b (from b/g or g) 22Mbps or change your PC wireless adapter to 802.11b 22Mbps.

    Hi milehighscott,

Now that i ve specified a port with the Telnet command, there's no more error. He just opens a blank (black) window in dos command prompt and nothing further happens.

I've set both modem and adapter to 802.11b. since i m using wireless.
Internet connection does not seem to drop anymore during login, but i still get timed out either during ''retrieving character'' or ''retrieving maps''.

Thanks for your assistance and friendly help.

For telnet, once you hit enter hit enter several more times. If you get the error response you are connected on that port and the server application is rejecting the connection. If you keep hitting enter and get just cursor lines you aren't connected on that port to the application.

Ok pressed enter a couple of time.. received the following error:

    Error ''bad connection header''

    Connection to host lost

OK that is good, that means at that one time the TCP port is open and you can connect. Now this doesn't check for packet loss or dynamic port drops/rejects but at least we know it isn't 100% blocked. :)

You mentioned that setting your wireless to 22Mbps 802.11b did help resolve somewhat right? Keep an eye out to see if the Internet cutting out for other applications is fixed with this.

If you want to go to the next step of doing a packet capture of the retrieving maps time out, I can help you read those.

I'll PM you my email address when you are ready to send it to me. Please make sure all other programs are closed so I don't get that traffic (facebook, email, etc)

For the past 3-4 hours I've restarted the game and keep getting stuck on retrieving list of maps after the login screen. It seems like others might be having the same problem?

There are no problems with my connection. These problems started after the patch. In fact, before i could be on sto while my uncle was playing his mmo in his room, on the same network. As far as the routing problems one would have to discover a general area or areas that people are having these problems in order to prove or disprove that claim.

Yeah, this isn't an isolated incident. I've been having the same "Server Not Responding" issue when transferring maps, or when logging on. I think a number of people seem to have this issue. Something in the recent patch changed where now people are for some reason or another getting rejected from the server. My ports are open for STO so I don't believe I'm having an issue of blocked traffic (in or out) on the ports. Just pretty much saying this should be looked into as I never had this problem (as neither did other people) until the patch was released.

I to have this problem, but it only started after the 45 day patch. Ive never had this problem until the day that the patch went in. It is so bad that I really just dont want to try and play the game, knowing that I could get stuck at one loading screen and never actually get to play.

Just got booted "Game Server Connection Failed" and have been unable to log back in. Tried lowering graphics to 800x600 like I have before but it did not help. This is getting really annoying and old.
