Windows 7 64-bit, Works then Doesn't

I'm on an HP Touchsmart laptop, running Windows 7 64. Before anyone thinks that's the problem, STO ran perfectly when first installed through a Steam digital download. Then Windows did an update, and it no longer worked. (The patch program ran through all the files, then crashes when Engage is clicked).

About the same time, I was getting bad flicker on IE, and several other programs stopped working. Not wanting to spend too much time on it, I backed up my data and reinstalled Windows 7. Everything was working perfectly, then something decided it needed a patch (still not sure what), and everything went to hell again.

So, I reinstalled Windows again, this time turning off the Windows Update option and doing a full C: format. Again, everything worked perfectly. I shut down the system, and went to bed. Then, on booting this morning, STO downloaded a small patch (though none was released last night). I couldn't see what it was, it went by too quick, but I think I saw something about VC. Now, it's back to the same thing. Windows hasn't applied any patches, but STO grabbed something for some runtime library, so I'm not letting Microsoft off the hook yet.

Anyone else having this issue?

Windows 7 64-bit and no problems. There was a small patch to STO this morning.

Really this sounds like your hard drive may be going bad on you. Try running chkdsk or scandisk or whatever they call it now.

That was part of the C: format. No issues with the hard drive, unfortunately.

You were getting video glitching and flickeing in IE? That sounds like a hardware issue (video card/ power supply)or even video card driver problem.

With this last install, STO stopped working before the flickering issue began, so I don't think they're related. The flickering began *this* time when I installed Adobe Flash Player.

If it was a video card issue, why would STO run (and run well) before any software patches or updates? That's the part that really irks me. =)

You already stated you were having flickering outside of the application, STO in question. You could simply have an older video card that overheated in the past, has a memory problem, driver corruption, etc.

If your transmission in your car is having problems, it would have issues independent of drag racing, but may be amplified by the load on it - just a crude example.

I'm thinking it's more of a software conflict with some updated patch or driver. Everything works fine, even running the computer for hours and running graphics intensive programs. Then, the next morning, everything runs fine until some program or driver got patched, then it all goes to hell again. I think the patch is more causal than the usage of the card. Each time it's given me issues has been right after a software patch.

Post up the output of dxdiag - the system information and display devices sections, that will help us get an insight to your pc.

Fixed! The fresh drivers from a fresh install work just fine, but once one of the display drivers (in this case, a DirectX dll) got updated, it caused a cascade of incompatibility. The latest ATI Catalyst program from HP's website took care of it. What caused the initial problem last week was a registry corruption of a Catalyst file (resulting in the mom.implementation issue).

Thanks for the help, Scott. It was an overlooked entry in my dxdiag readout that led to finding it.

Good deal, glad you are working. :)
