SB-Xfi and Star Trek Online

I have a friend who has almost the same system set up as me but he loses audio in the game, and all audio stops on the whole system. Sometimes it will come back, other times he has to reboot. The problem occurs when we use Teamspeak 2 and play Star Trek Online. System is running W7 32 bit and has the latest drivers. Video card is nVidia 8800 GTS and sound card is an SDB-Xfi. He has 2 GB memory and a AMD Athalon 64x2 5200 62 2.6 GHz. The only difference in this setup and mine is that I have an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.6 GHz. I have RealTek onboard and he has SoundMax. All drivers have been updated that are suspect.

Both motherboards are Asus but different brands.

Anyone run into this or know why when running ST:O all sound would cut out? He has submitted several trouble tickets to support without any response.

Thanks.

Check your exclusive mode settings for your sound device.

    ... and he has SoundMax.

We will need to know the motherboard he has. There was an issue with nVidia chipsets and X-Fi cards on 32Bit drivers a while ago if I remember right.

Unfortunately - this isn't an issue with STO - it's a Creative labs/ASUS issue (one I hd for two tears in WoW and EVE Online. What fixed it for me were some Creative WinXP 32 beta divers -" X-Fi Beta Drivers 10-18-08 - SBXF_PCDRVBETA_US_2_18_0006.exe"; and BECAUSE I had the issue for SOOOO long, I'm now NOT updating from those drivers until/if I see another issue with the SB X-Fi - but I will say, it's th LAST card I'm ever buying from Creative Labs as their response to the issue on their forums was underwhelming to say the least. (And again, since you're on Win7 - those drivers aren't compatible).

FYI - here's the thread regarding the issue on the Craetive labs SB forums - it started on 9-23-2006 and the most recent post was on 11-11-2009. Craetive Labs tke - "Not our problem go bother ASUS (even though if you read through the thread, MANY types of hardware congibs using mom-ASUS MBs have had the issue.

If you have X-fi soundcards I would recommend that you would disable your onboard sound in bios and uninstall the drivers.

Thanks for the info all. I did have him disable the onboard sound in the BIOS which helped. I will check into the Asus vs. Creative side as well. It is really too bad that this may be the case. I have recommended he remove the X-fi card and see is the onboard sound has any issues, just to see if it is one or the other.

I'll look into the sound modes too.

I don't think it is an ASUS vs. Creative Labs thing unless ASUS is trying to force people into buying their audio cards.

I do know that Creative Labs + 32Bit Drivers + nVidia Motherboard Chipset = crackling and other issues. So if that AMD board is one of the nForce 700+ series it could be presenting with this issue.

It's not an asus with creative labs issue, I've had 5 different comps all with asus boards and creative sound cards ranging including sb 5.1, sb audigy gamer, sb audigy 2 zs, sb audigy 2, sb xifi fatality gamer. Like I've said, check your exclusive mode settings, this has been an issue since they decieded to rip out directsound from windows.
