Martial Arts - A hidden gem in this game.

After reading a post a while back, I decided to try out the marshal arts in this game. It is quite good, many combos and animations are top notch. I decide to go with my second character, as no weapon primary and a pistol back up. Where I used to dread when the group got into close range now, I love it, the combat is much more interactive.

I like beaming down to a planet, without a weapon drawn and ready for combat. Also, thanks to the survey, I picked up a free Ferengi, and the lanky Ferengi going Chuck Norris on a Klingon Swordsman is a quite a comic sight.

In early levels, Pistols and Martial Arts share the same Close Combat Skills. So nothing goes wasted, you may have already picked up skills in this. In addition, I recommend getting a exploit pistol, for those opportune times, and when you need to attack at range. And get real comfortable with the Z swap weapon key, you will use it.

If you have not tried it out, definitely check it out. just remove the weapon from your hands, and the martial arts functions will kick in. The DPS is actually higher, and the number of exposes is impressive (one the reason for the back up pistol). Nothing better than knock the enemy to the ground, and while they are exposed, pulling out a pistol and melting them. So un-Star Trek, but so fun.

IMHO it may be a little too powerful, so check it out before its nerfed.

    /agree

I do this too. I like it even more than the bat'leth thingy.

I've been a Special Ops/Martial Artist since headstart. For aspiring Martial Artists, I suggest the following:

    1. Get Pollyalloy Armor if you want stronger defense.
    2. Get the armor that increases Physical Strength if you want stronger dps
    3. Get a Bat-Leth at Cmd. from DS9
    4. Use a Kit that has Lunge, Sweep, Stealth Module, and your chose of something else. Ima try Ambush. I found Motion Accelerator to such unless you ground PvP, and Smoke Grenade to a waste aswell.

Doing it all the time on the science officer. So much more fun than spamming a rifle and whatnot.
After doing 1 run to RA using mainly rifles going with pistols and MA feels so very relaxing. :D

Does melee combat work well for BO's now? Not so long ago they just stood there if you'd give them a Bat'leth for example.

    /agree here too.

Plus I add: I make my character an "alien" with hand-to-hand enhancing racial attributes. Physical Strength, Sturdy, (I can't remember them all and I am not at my own computer) :D He looks perfectly human and RP-wise he is a 1/4 Romulan just for kicks.

    Sorry, I missed this one.

NO. I tried it last night for the first time and my "Orion-slave-girl-assassins" just stood there or took a knee.

I'm curious if martial arts is better, equal but different, or worse than bat'leths.

    Anyone have a firm idea?

Do watch out for your "buddy" who goes happy with the plasma grenades. If you aren't working with people you know, you'll have a tendency to wind up in flames a lot. It happens to me in "Breaking the Planet" ...especially last night. Some guy was probably trying to grief me by targeting the Klingon I was fighting, but it was hard to tell for sure. I didn't die or take much damage, but it is a bit disturbing to be running around on fire.

I think bat'leth give you more exposes... but I am not certain, just from experience.

I agree, I enjoy Martial Arts. Takes a while to get over being frustrated by being knocked back by a rifle butt and having to start the combo again.

Was in a group doing the Q mission as my tac officer, and when the borg mini-boss spawned I ran up to it and beat it sensless whilst exposing its back to the others to get some large numbers. Dead in no time at all. Deeply satisfying.

Shame getting near borg drones to beat them up is not advisable.

I doubt Martial Arts will get nerfed. It works well PvE (what doesn't?) but it is an under powered in PvP. Even with a bat'leth you aren’t going to be able to come close to the amount of damage of someone using the pulsewave/splitbeam combo.

Now, the Pulse/Split combo is the best combo out there, so you might want to give it a try before they nerf it. There really is nothing quite like vaporizing 3 real players at the same time in PvP. It's fun in PvE also, just not as fun.

Quoted for Truth. If you are going to be in melee a lot. Pollyalloy Armor is you best friend. Because you Personal Shield doesn't blunt HtH attacks.
    2. Get the armor that increases Physical Strength if you want stronger dps
    [/quote[

It's only +7.5% extra damage. Not really worth it, in my opintion. You give up a substantial amount of protection for a minimal amount of increased damage.
    3. Get a Bat-Leth at Cmd. from DS9

A Bat-Letth can substantial amount of damage as well. It doesn't do more damage then martial arts, but it does have a different set of combos, and some unique maneuvers.
    4. Use a Kit that has Lunge, Sweep, Stealth Module, and your chose of something else. Ima try Ambush. I found Motion Accelerator to such unless you ground PvP, and Smoke Grenade to a waste aswell.

Lunge is a must have. It's an Exploit attack that's available all of the time even if you are armed with a weapon. You will change your mind about the Motion Accelerator if you run into a mad, bomb laying Engineer (I love/hate Chroniton Mines ). Or when you start running into the Borg. Their Assimilation attack IS very nasty. A Hold, big DoT and a substantial movement debuff which lasts quite a while afterwards. Motion Control totally negates the movement debuff because you definite want to keep moving when fighting Borg.

Don't forget to get a science BO with hypospray Dylovene (or whatever, the D one) it'll increase your melee damage by 50% for 45 seconds. Short cooldown.

I melee all the time as a science officer ( i have dylovene on my kit.)

I did this every once in a while to change things up from the normal tedium. However, most of the time I just keep everyone equipped with split beam rifles, and 2 on my main and most mob groups are long dead before they even have a chance to close in on me.

I learned last week that I was relying far too heavily on my sniper rifles - so I went with sniper rifle - bat'leth and my Tac off has a beuatiful rare kit now with stealth, lunge, and leg sweep...sweet - pick em off when I first arrive with the sniper and I'm preapred to take on the ones that make a run for me in close combat. Martial arts for when the other two aren't quite right for the situation...

where did I learn this? From the J. Riker NPCr in mission invovling true way. You let him out from teh cell and he went all chuck norris on the cardies... :) So I tried it - and it worked with good effect!

I usually tell my crew to stand down while I do a one-on-one face-off against a commander NPC. It's especially gratifying when you show the Klingon captains the business end of your combat boot.

Yeah it's fun punching Borgs in the tutorial, but in PvP people can spam riflebutt and theyre always out of range before you can finish your combos. Not to mention the pathetic damage.

I've been meaning to try the martial arts kit!!! Thanks for the post!! I've seen my Boffs use the Bat'leh (I have an all Klingon Crew with Betazed Captain). They sort of use it..but not satisfactorily.

Yeah. All of the KB of the Expose Weapons is annoying as heck when trying to do Martial Arts.

Maybe 'taking a knee' was her special martial art.....

I dunno why, but I've always felt that Orion Slave girls should get a special, 'TRIBBLE Dentata' attack.

I dunno; I was in a 1v5 PvP match earlier today and got tired of being instantly held/killed before I could do much damage with my weapons, so I went straight martial arts. Ran into the Klingon ball and right off the bat beat one to death. Then get held/held/stunned/held/held some more/ killed. I swear I was held so much in that match I thought I saw Barney the big purple dinosaur run by in Klingon spine armor....

If you do the Fleet action on the ground. Mele Hand to hand is a must! Knock those feddies into the Hole - btw Gorn bite is nice to.
I still don't have the controll to prevent from spamming the keys to get better than the 1st level jabs.
