I have the XFX 5870 TRIBBLE version which is tuned for gaming, and i am having difficulties with star trek online.

There are consistant graphic crash while on ground mission with heavy lighting underground, and i have found out the reason behind all of this.
If you find yourself with graphic crashes, then by all means disable the "dynamic lighting" in options.

After i turned down the shadow details, antialiasing and dynamic lighting; everything worked perfectly.
Either it is a driver issue, or cryptic needs to fix their graphic engine.....

This issue has been around since the start it is just dynamic lighting, has nothing to do with anything else.

If you have one of the 8000 series cards just turn dynamic lighting off in the graphics options and your all set.

I think it has something to do with the 5800 series cards as there are a lot of reports online regarding grey screening and tearing with that series. It was supposed to be fixed with the 10.2 drivers. The issue effected some 5700 series cards also but not as badly as the 5800's. I put a new 5670 in friday and it runs like a champ even with dynamic lighting turned on with the 10.2 drivers but then it isn't one of the series that seems to be affected. ATI is said to be working hard to address this problem. just do a google thread for ATI grey screen to get more info about this issue.

Well, my nvidia 9800GTX was crashing in ground combat too with dynamic enabled, it went away after I updated my drivers and directX, guess I'm just lucky. :p Though I'm starting to wonder if all the required DX files are included in the game install, as I noticed the update added some files that were from January which it thought were missing/outdated. /shrug

Here's the link to update your DirectX if you wanna give that a try...

I have a Diamond 5870 with everything turned on max including full shadows, dynamic lighting, and 8x AA.

I have had no major problems thus far playing 3 different toons one of which is a RA5.

The only real issue is on one of the bases the ground reflection is extremely bright and shiny.

It also looks like it doesn't extend the "shiny" lighting past 100m so I can actually see what the ground looks like on the other side of the room.

As I walk the ground starts changing to that ridiculous shine.

    Very annoying.

Turn your AA down to 4x, then the whole room is overly shiny xD

I've had this same issue with my brand new XFX 5770 with Catalyst 10.2 drivers. It's strange that it only seems to crash on indoor ground missions which have that grating on the floor such as the interiors of ships and bases. It usually happens a minute or two into the mission when there is a fire-fight going on. It will start to stutter a bit when shooting and then eventually freeze then crash to the desktop. Is this what others are experiencing with 58xx or 57xx series cards?

Turning off dynamic lighting and shadows also fixes the crashing issues for me.

I'm going to try the Catalyst 10.3 beta drivers tonight and see if I get any crashes with dynamic lighting and shadows on. I'll post my results.

I run a 4850x2 2GB and the only change I had to make was the number of light sources to 2. Now I run it with Max Graphics including 8x AA and don't have any problems except when on ground missions with lots of shield generators and explosions I get reduced framerates.

im having all the same problems listed in this thread.. have a 5870 card, i find 99% of my crashes happen during interior ground combat when a number of skills are activated between my group and the enemy mob

outdoor ground combat has virtually no crashes (the odd one here and there)

i've had one crash in space (sector map view), never during space combat

i have all settings maxed in both game and in the CCC...im gonna mess around with them as suggested and see if that yields any results

sidebar: anyone else using a 5870 or similar card get wicked chug in space? i get it when there are a large number of asteroids and maps that include a lot of transparent gas bodies and that sort of thing

ive got details maxed and draw distance at 100 and 1900x1200res, but i dunno, 5870 should be able to laugh at that...curious what others are getting or if perhaps this is just normal

Has directX come with a new update since the launch of windows 7?
If not, I have the latest updates from windows update in my windows 7, so unless directX has some own update procedures, then my directX is up to date and i still have the graphic error.

However, I have tried to disable the Catalyst A.I driver option in the advanced 3D meny.
I noticed that my game runs faster and more stable now, might be a plecebo effect but...

My guess is that Star trek online is such a new game that the ATI guys & gals havent yet had the time to make drivers that make A.I take advantage of the game STO :) So, i turned it off just in case,,,

DirectX doesn't use the windows update tool to update, as most games and applications come with and install the required DX files and updates for it. But I noticed that after installing STO and then launched the DirectX updater a couple days later when I updated my g-card drivers, it found that there were quite a few updates for it. Possibly in all the rushed launch confusion those required DirectX files required to run dynamic lighting didn't get added into the game's installer?? /shrug

It wouldn't hurt at least to try, narrow the list of possible causes of the problem. :)

(even thou it doesn't say to restart your computer after updating, you should before starting up STO again)

Thanks for the suggestion Trekker. I believe I have DirectX 11 but I will try the updater anyways and see if that helps.

I haven't tried the Catalyst 10.3 beta drivers yet but will tonight if DX11 update doesn't help.

Well, last night I tried the Catalyst 10.3 beta drivers AND updated my DirectX to the latest version yet still crash on those damn interior ground missions with the grating on the floor. These are the only places I get any issues at all.

Once again I tried disabling dynamic lighting and shadows and all my issues are resolved. So strange. It's not a big deal to disable those settings but I would at least like to be able to play with dynamic lighting turned on.

I'm not sure if this is an issue with the Catalyst driver and 57XX/58XX series cards or how the game is coded or both. Oh well for now I guess I'll be playing those missions with dynamic lighting and shadows off. :(

When you have shadows enabled are you using 8x antialiasing? Have you tried 4x AA? Same for dynamic lighting.

I have it set to 4X all the time. I can barely tell the difference between 4X and 8X so I leave it lower for better frames/sec. I have Anisotropic filtering set to 16X usually.

Very perplexing. Risking getting bombed to death I'm gonna say it's an ATi driver issue. (ducks n cover)

Though looking some more maybe it could be an issue with cards with more than 1gb of ram. I see one person had a nvidia 7950gx2 which has 1gb shared. And I know a few ppl with nvidia 280s that had this problem, dunno if they still do, again 1gb+. Now two of my cards 9800gtx with 512mb and 7xxx with 256mb both are running fine. (though that wouldn't explain why I was crashing before i updated my driver ) Very perplexing indeed.

nope, had this happen with xfired 3870s. got a pair of 5770 xfired, but i havn't done any ground based missions yet with DL and PP enabled so i can't say if STO'll crash.

After searching through the forms on this issue and realizing like you said this is happening on both brand of cards more on ATI, I really don't think this anything to do with our cards or drivers but just poorly wriiten code on the developers part. My card HD5870 runs beautifully with all the other games out there no hiccups and smooth frame rates accept for this one. So I don't get why ATI or Nvidia have to run out and write new drivers just for this game shouldn't that be up to the developer to make there game work properly with the cards. I don't know just my thoughts.

Good point, its always been that way though it seems, it must be a tradition. ;) Maybe card companys ask game developers to challenge them? That's a very good point you made, it floored me. :D
