Windows 7 64-bit/Launcher crashing PC

Hey there,

There I was.. impatiently downloading STO as soon as my friend gave me his friend-pass-thingy...
I start up the launcher *click*

--- PATCHING ---

Up until either 36% or 46%, the PC freezes over. ( nooOOOoOO !!! )

I have redownloaded, reinstalled and tried to repatch twice but nothing changes.

I am working on a Windows 7 64-bit version and have a pretty great setup.
I am downloading at a speed of : on average: 500 kb/s

I am at work right now up until 5 PM +1GMT so I cannot do any of the manipulations at this time, but if anyone has any ideas what so ever. I would greatly appreciate as I am TRIBBLE with sorting out these kind of problems on my PC.

Thanks in advance.

and hoping to see you ingame .... one day ;)

Interesting. I run Windows 7 64-Bit and did a digital download of the game back on release day and have had no issues with the launcher crashing. Are you sure your computer is in tip top shape? (i.e. no viruses/spyware, fragmented HDD, low memory, etc.)

I'll double check it tonight... just incase.

but I have more than 800mb free space left on the drive. 4G Ram but I shall check for any spyware tonight as I havn't thought about that as I havn't had any problems for quite some time... My HDD is newly implanted and working perfectly with hardly anything on it but I'll defrag it anyway just out of interest.

Eerhm after that I'm really not sure why it would even freeze my whole system as it is only patching up a game. :'(

Only 800 MB left available on the hard drive? I would dare to say that this is your issue more than likely. Have you received any low virtual memory warnings? WIn7 and Vista both use up much more space on the hard drive, including virtual memory. Typically anything lower than 1.5 GB free space on the hard drive has the potential for causing issues. Also, was it loaded with Win7 at purchase or was Win7 installed as an upgrade? The reason I ask is that I have yet to deal with a computer that an "Upgrade" install was done and the computer has been problem free. I fresh full install will always provide better results with less headaches. If it was a Win7 PC at purchase, then this is null and void.

Check first exactly how much space you have left on the hard drive and post that up.

800G ! Sorry ! .. I freshly installed a version of Windows 7 on the new 1TB Harddrive. I'll see if I have any Window updates missing , although they download automatically. The thing is, I have so little installed onto the harddrive.. a couple of games, Steam, CCleaner, Bittorrent and a few futile things... It's like a blank canvas.

I do however have a second harddrive which came off of my other PC.. it was always used as storage, could any files on that harddrive be the cause of this ?

*thanks for helping me by the way :)

haha...No prob. I am not really sure then. The second hard drive would not interfere with anything. Hopefully someone else can shed some light on the subject.

Im also running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Ive only ever experiance one issue and that was after the last patch. The game would patch just fine , But after abot 20% into the loading screen the game would just crash. After spending an hour checking things out on my systeem a reboot fixed the problem.

But, in your case it sounds like it may be more of a problem with permisons/UAC

Launcher patching issues, look at my FAQ - note the test launchers at the bottom of the post that are there to address 64bit and network adapter issues.

Just in case, you know that you have to have Admin rights to download and install?

    Good morning everyone,

    It now works !

I'm not entirely sure why, but this is what I did...

I right clicked onto the launch pad icon and clicked on ' Open as Admin'. (although when it poses a problem it always asks me if I want to open up as Admin..( btw, why isn't this automatic ? as I am as admin on the PC ? )
I went into the options of the launchpad and clicked on Proxy EU, then Force Verify.

I cleaned my PC up a little with Ccleaner then tried it... and to my amazement it worked !

Cheers for helping me out everyone and I'll hopefully be blowing you up to smithereens anything soon ! mwahahahahah ! pew opew pshhhhhhh (phaser effect)
