Hello, i just picked this up last friday, made it to LT grade 6. I have a buddy who plays but due to his work scheduel he hasnt been online to help me much. So i have been playing solo, been doing alright so far. I have noticed that when i get into an area im put into a instanced group. There are people in there who are lower level then me, yet they do more dmg and seem to fly alot faster then i can. So im assuming i need some upgraded parts. I tried looking around and the only things i can seem to find are parts that require badges.

Being that I have to kids under 2 my time to play is very limited to a couple hours durning nap time and after they go to bed. So i was just wondering if someone could go the things i should do early in the game?

Just go with the flow. It takes a little getting use to early on but you will learn.

Go to your class forums (Science, Tactical or Engineer) and read the stickied guides (or the posts with the most views).

I would not spend any energy credits early on. Save then up until you learn more.

Also, this video/podcast helped me learn more about basic strategy:

They have other videos + podcasts that may help ya.

    Other than that, HAVE FUN!

Generally just play the game in the directions it guide you. Don't do missions that are over your level (i.e. Rank / Grade). As you complete certain missions you'll receive better ship gear. It will be of higher Mk (i.e. better) or better quality (which adds some smaller bonuses then normal lesser gear).

One importnat aspec to ship combat is your ships power settings. The will affect how well the variou subsystems of your ship performs. The more power you allocate they better the will be. If you want to know more about ship power. I just happen to have a guide. The link is in my .sig below.

Another thign will will greatly increase you speed is Full Impuse. That's the button above your throttle,. It put all power into your engines for maximum speed. But you can't use anything else until you disengage Full Impulse and power levels return to normal.

Since you mentioned other players flying faster than you I thought I'd chime in with something that caught me by surprise in Open Beta ... have you discovered Full Impulse?

When you're in a system and you press E to increase your ship and get to max you are not actually flying at maximum impulse. You need to click the up arrow above the speed meter to enter 'Full Impulse'. This will make you go markedly faster but is only available when you are in-system and not in combat.

Other than that -- try to get Mk II gear (as a Lieutenant) and be sure to equip your ship with consoles and better engines and deflectors, etc, as you receive them as drops. As another poster mentioned I wouldn't run around spending a whole lot of credits just yet. Just equip the stuff as you receive it from missions.

Yeah, full impulse was what i was missing. I know there is 2 consoles i need yet. There a good place to obtain them? Been on the look out for some better stuff from drops, sadly i have had no luck. Sold alot of my TRIBBLE and i did manage to find a better weapon after i sold my junk.

You can always check out the Exchange; it's the player market. You can access Exchange terminals on Sol base, Memory Alpha, DS9, probably a few other places. Note that the first few pages are going to be astronomically high; scroll to the end of the listing; it sorts prices basically from high to low.

Those stations also have different venders that sell different ship equipment for badges and for energy credits. You just have to run around clicking on people to see what they have.

Some quests give equipment as a reward; when you chose a quest, you can scroll down to see what the reward choices are.

You also can get loot from destroying ships. Usually batteries, but sometimes you get consoles or weapons.
