Getting disconnected a lot!

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Anyone else having connection problems? I've checked everything I can think of. I get good pings to many sites on the web, speedtest.net shows up/download speeds are fine no matter where I pick in the US. I've tried ping and tracert and I don't see any issues there. Is there anything to test against at cryptic?
Occasionally, it the game will crash to desktop. When I restart it, it verifies all the files and find nothing wrong.

This is getting very aggravating. If anyone has any suggestions, I'll try anything at this point. :(

Thanks.

Are you using wired or wireless for your network adapter?

Make sure you have the current driver for your adapter, as a start. You should next take a look at your modem and router to make sue they have a current flash version.

What are the brand, model (including rev), and driver/flash version with date of those devices?

Hi all when I patch or connect to play STO (Star Trek Online) I loose my connection to my 2wire DSL gateway model 2701HG-B Gateway modem. I also some times have the rubber banding that is mentioned. I did a tracepatch here are the results I am not sure what this all means but I am paying for the best dsl att offers to play this game. ATT says it is Cryptics fault and I would have to say they are right since everything else game wise call of durty 4, 5 and MW2 run very fast and never get laggy.

Bandwidth does not mean you don't have a network driver conflict, wireless issue, modem or router that has a problem with small packets, or packet loss just as an example.

You are posting here the peer support forum, please have the courtesy to answer these basic questions so we have a basic insight to your environment to help you.

Hello Stomper - the 2wire is a known issue for many games, it can't handle many small packets being sent from the client to the server. The current live launcher patching process does this. For now you can do three things,

Try the latest Dev SuperMartin test launcher
Move from wireless to wired for your PC connect to your 2wire
Lower the speed on your 2wire wireless or wired LAN connection

    Please see http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?p=2162991#post2162991 for details

NOTE: World of Warcraft support states the following for the 2wire
    2Wire wireless modems/routers
Players have reported that setting this device to use 802.11b wireless mode will stabilize it. Contact your manufacturer for more details.

And the firmware update did nothing to resolve the issue (not that I expected it to as there was no mention of packet size handling issues)..

on the nettest port 80 and 443 are uses as a refrerreance so that if everying is filtered the same the values for the ports 7000-7500 would be close to those values. which there are not so something is not normal specailly with a ping of over 500 (looks almost like double buffering)

What is the problem? I have been trying to play for more than half an hour and keep getting disconnected from the server. I have checked my end and can find nothing wrong. Is the server unstable? Overworked?
I can not see paying a fee for this kind of service.

Turning the Proxy settings on the launcher to none and trying to play without AV/Firewalls may solve some connection problems :) though the latter isn't a long term solution it will show if it's causing the problem.

Its called coincidence. If it was truly a problem with the servers, then everyone would be having this problem. Theyre not.

And a tracert to a webserver is completely different than performing a nettest to the actual gameservers.

More examples of really poor code in game engine handling of network information...

You disconnect in the middle of a game exit sequence your client count is at 35seconds....

You reconnect immediately and are back in that map with the leave map count starting over again at 60 seconds...

Microsoft Windows ping uses ICMP, nettest is not using ICMP for the "ping", it is using TCP 80 (non HTTP traffic btw)

Seriously? The direct ping to the ip is 25ms how is it your program is reporting 500ms?

Install Ping Plotter Standard (not the freeware version), use TCP and port 7255 with WinPcap instead of ICMP for you ping.

Any change on your side at 12:16:41 PM?

Setup ping plotter to use TCP 7255 and run the trace to patchserver.crypticstudios.com,208.95.184.25

Temp bump down your interval to 1 second and run 50 samples

That is what I suspected, your connection is getting dropped or reset well BEFORE Cryptic's network. Your packet loss is 26% on 50 packets, which is extremely high.

When Ping Plotter can't access the final hop (patchserver.crypticstudios.com) the routers 68.86.153.246 and 68.86.210.209 show missing returns also.

Something at or before te-0-1-0-7-ar01.newcastle.de.panjde.comcast.net 68.86.153.246 and pos-0-4-0-0-ar01.401nbroadst.pa.panjde.comcast.net 68.86.210.209 in the Comcast backbone is your problem.

As an additional test you can switch Ping Plotter to use ICMP and run a traditional ping. I bet you would find the ISP is not touching ICMP echo request (ping) so they look good... :o

I bet there are others using these same hops that are having problems also.

Congratulations, you now have some evidence to go forward to Comcast with if you so choose to and can get escalated to a true network engineer level. :)

I'm sure they will understand, but make sure you tell them you are using TCP port 7255 and not just a simple ICMP ping. Some people might blow off ICMP echo request drops, I know some of our admins did. ;)

Yes I explicitly asked why I was having TCP packet handling issues, and why the first few hops on the comcast network weren't replying to TCP inquiries.
