Team work?

Let me start off by saying I love this game. I used to play Starfleet Command and this is very reminiscent of that game...but much better.

Now I have played many mmos over the years, and most require some sort of team work. Ill use Wow for example because love it or hate it, its a very popular and well known game. (I don't want this to be a Wow flame thread..this is only an example). But in that game the tank gets the mobs attention...dps and related buffers / debuffers go to work on it... healers put there swang on those who need healing... boss or mob dies. I'm keeping this very simlpe...

But in STO anyone can just fly into a group of mobs and start shooting... there are no tatics... no real working together. Basically its every man / woman for them selves and hope there are few deaths. But wait... who cares if ya die... there is no penality..

So I guess what I'm saying is are we ever gonna see any team work?

Well said. Since Cryptic has announced there will be a death penalty in the upcoming patch, I can see the need for teamwork becoming greater.

Now, I mostly solo, that's how I've played in the majority of MMOs I've been in. That said, there are times when a team effort is needed to complete the quest/mission.

The problem I have seen is, ok we have this enemy squadron to take out and was put in an open instance of strangers on a team. 90%+ of the time, there is no communication between team members. I've tried to talk and been ignored, or perhaps the combat spam hid the responses. Without communicating, there can not be true teamwork.

I've heard the complaints in Zone chat about no one works together to take out the CE or some other fleet action or even deep space encounters. again, this would be due to communication.

I only tried the CE once, but there was only 1 other player in the instance with me so we were outgunned, being only Lt Commanders.

Now in the deep space encounters, even tho not grouped, I do try to get in there and fight the enemies with others, especially when going against a large number. Typically, I try circling the biggest ship in the enemy group, firing all my beam weapons constantly while spamming my shields. That is for any escorts in the lil group I'm in to go in and take 'em out. I fly a cruiser and that seems the best tatic...broadside the enemy shields down and let the more manueverable ships use cannons and torpedoes to destroy.

What we need to improve teamwork, Cryptic has already given...the chat system, tho we need to be able to filter the window or have a separate window for team chat so we can do team work and coordinate the attack.

Admittedly, I've never played WoW, but I understand the tactics you mention, as I did play both EQ and EQ2 -- same basic ideas in group fighting.

    well, that's my 2 credits :D

No one else thinks there should be team work?

I have a couple of friends that I play with. We team up together. It is great fun, and we know each other well, so it is like a dance in space. A few folks have joined us, only to go tearing off to scan something while we are fighting a group of enemies. None seemed willing to say more than hi, if that, mostly. One exception to this was a fellow that said he had never seen such a tight group working together in STO. Getting to know each other here is hard to do, but I am hoping that by example, we can find others that enjoy being part of a group that sticks together and cares.

I agree, we need more team work in the game. I've soloed the whole game once, and I'm currently doing it a second time. Hopefully when more end game content is released it will have team work.

I'm afraid the team/grouping problem isn't restricted to just this Cryptic game. CO has the exact same problem. Since there is no death penalty, there is no consequence if you die. Therefore no need to team. And when you do team I'll agree there is no communication between the players what so ever. I'm glad they are putting in a death penalty because to me it adds excitment as long as it's not overly harsh. Maybe with the death penalty we'll see the use of tactics and more "LFG" in zone chat.

My only advice for team work in the current version of STO, is quite simple, if you think team work is needed or wanted, form a team if you are not allready in team. Then take charge, issue orders, use you imagination regarding the issue of orders depending on the situation you find yourself in, this can range from a FvK battle to a simple Deep Space Encounter.

I am aware that some players will simply ignore you and do there own thing, at present this can not be helped, but every now and again, it will work. As mentioned previously, if you know your team mates, discuss tactics before you get into a hostile situation and take note of your team mates abilities, simply by asking them what they have available.

The potential for Team Work and the "Tanks" and "Healers" are already in the game, it simply requires you (The Players) to work together.

As for the implementation of a new team work system for a future patch to add into the game, I have no ideas how it would work at present, although I may think on the matter further.

I suggest somebody starts a new thread in the Discussion or General gameplay Feedback section of the forusms specifically for New Ideas for a New team Work System, the new thread should be full f useful ideas on the topic at hand and nothing else.

Maybe with the death penalty we'll see the use of tactics and more "LFG" in zone chat.

I agree with you on the DP and also feel it will make the difference, however I do not know what LFG means, please add it to my STO Acronyms & Contractions Database (in my sig) if you have the time, thanks. :)

Thank you, please add it into my STO Acronyms thread, it's linked into my sig, theres a huge list in the thread and there are plenty more to be added, all recognition for the work goes to whoever posts in the thread.

I hope they change our die to 25 captain missions as the KDF with the introduction of a death penalty. Why would any company encourage you to die?

Not what I meant Alecto.... I don't wanna group to just issue orders or be a jerk.

(Example) In WoW if you just run in and hit a boss mob, your more then likely gonna die. Where as if a tank goes in gets heals followed by dps, debuffers etc the mob will die. I understand the game isn't to this point yet...but that is the point...will STO ever get there? Or just be a single player game with other people around???

I got what you ment, and by no means did I have any intention of suggesting that anyone be a "Jerk", all i am saying is that the basics of what your asking for are allready in game.

A Engineering Officer in a Cruiser with abilities buffing shields and hull is the Tank right?

A Science Offcier in a Science Vessel with abilities to buff allies, restoring shield strengh e.t.c. are Healers right?

...and I guess the tactical officers debuff the enemy and provide covering fire right?

It may simply just be my opinion, but I think it's all in game, it's just down to the players to use Team Work.

I have encountered and taken part in the exact same scenarios that you mention above happening in WoW, but in FvK battles in STO, only with myself taking command of the other Captains in teh team via chat. Following the battle, two of the players out of five that I had teamed with were stunned, and talked about how that was the first tme they had won a battle against the Klingons in FvK.

Lorus, pardon me for asking, but you are in a fleet......the fleet folks don't group up? Is it a big fleet, or a small one? Just curious, as the dynamics here are fairly different than I am used to in-game. I have always been in a more rp inclined online game.

Look me up in-game if you have need of a nice group. We are always willing to share with others.

Yes Riasha I am in a very good fleet. And yes Alecto, the mechanic are in the game as you stated.

But I'm sure you've seen it where one person can fly head-on into a group of what ever mobs and then its just a free for all...lol. It just feels at this time the game has no real group or fleet structure for killing what ever mobs...

Opps :eek:there goes the impatient tac officer into a group of 5 Borg vessiles...ok lets go save him... half way there hes dead. Once we engage them...then 30 sec later here comes the tac officer who was killed rejoining the fight.

    Know what I mean?

Well.. ummm yeah, seen that happen... that is when some good natured ear chewing makes Tac a little bit less antsy next time. :) But, on the other hand, that same ants in the pants has saved my butt as many time as I have saved his. LOL
