Save Password Check Box, PLEASE!

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
This is a plea on behalf of the millions upon millions of us who are the sole users of our computers, and thus have no reason to be concerned about relatives, siblings, spouses, or children accidentally logging into our Star Trek Online accounts and messing things up for us.

IE, this plea is on behalf of 90% of people!

Please, won't you put a "save password" check-box on the front log-in screen?

Every time I open the game, I have to re-type my password.

Every. Other. Program. Website. Et Cetera. That. I. Use. Saves. The. Password!

E-Mail, Bulletin Boards, Games, IM Programs, you name it! There is a "save password" option.

The in-game login screen that you get dropped to on the occasion you lose connection to the server has a "save password" check box.

Yet the front page control interface you use daily, every time you open the game, does not! WHY?

I can not imagine this would be a particularly difficult ad-on to throw into the next patch. So please, gods, do it! Please!

Very few MMOs have this "feature" on their launchers or login screens (for obvious reason). I wouldn't hold my breath.

    Why?

Virtually everything else you log in to on the internet or computer has such.

Hell, even PayPal will save my password through my browser.

The only place I have to type my password every time is my bank.

    This is not a bank.

    It's a computer game.

Give us the simple convenience of a password checkbox, please!

And tbh if they were to consider it I doubt it would be top of a probably very long list of things to do. so if you do hold your breath for it don't be surprised if you turn blue

are you serious omg ... of all the things for them to bother with you need them to try and save you 1 second of typing on first login .

congratulations you are the laziest person in the world.

    I support this feature.

The only other website that feels it's important enough not to have a "save" checkbox is my bank and I only just forgive it.

STO (especially now that it's F2P) is not more important than my bank.

I would vocally oppose this feature, as it would open the door to "I let my friend on JUST this once" or "My connection somehow got hijacked and I got TRIBBLE" or "I accidentally left it on at the Library" or other such silly complaints. I want my security protected, and as recent hacks in to fleet banks prove, your security does have an impact on my own.

There are also security benefits to saving passwords, mainly it prevents key logger attacks like the recent trojan that was on STOwiki.

There are pluses and minuses to both sides.

Actually I'm in complete disagreement with the OP. You have people that purchase subscriptions either gold or lifetime and people that also purchase c-points. Now I know some people use credit cards or other methods to purchase the c-points so in fact the log-in to this game is very much just as important as a bank log-in as you gave for example.

Instead of decreasing security by adding a save password option they should in fact be working on some type of verification system to verify you are you when you try to log-in. a Perfect example of this would be an IP verification so that if someone (including yourself) tried to log in from a computer that isn't linked to the account then you have to verify that you are the owner of the account by way of security questions or something similar.

I understand this is just a game and that setting up a verification system like that would be quite alot of work, but now that the game is F2P and there are so many more players that increases the risk of hacking attacks.

Most online games I know have this feature and I never got the feeling that it opened the door to hacking by itself. It´s tedious to retype the password anytime I switch characters... especially when doing my DOff rounds. :(

Totally agree. I was floored that I had to log in every single time I played.

The thing is, it may actually *reduce* security against actual hackers. People will use passwords they can remember if they have to type it every time, making hacking their accounts much easier.

That would definitely be more convenient, but not by much. I don't think it's worth adding, since it usually takes ~2 seconds to enter a password.

Different issue. What you're referring to is games going back to your character select screen instead of a login screen.

What the OP wants is for the launcher to save their password. I don't know of many, if any, MMOs that will save a password on their launcher.

i would prefer when u log out it takes u to charater screen and not completely out of the game doff'ing on 12 toons is almost impossible u spent hrs everyday just logging in and out i type my password about 40 times a day playing STO

Perhaps just a "Character Screen" option in addition to "Log Out" would be sufficient.

Most other MMOs have this. It is quite annoying to have to retype your password every time you want to switch characters. I recently made a few new alts in preparation for the up coming Q weekend, and I think I got carpal tunnel syndrome from typing my password so much. :)

^ this. Switching characters should never log you out of the game completely.

The problem is, is that you have to log in twice. Once on the splash screen and once in the login screen. I don't really understand this.

Wow and Swtor both use a splash screen the same as STO. Wow does not have a login on their splash screen, just a play button that takes you to login. Swtor does it the other way round, login in on the splash screen and then pressing play takes you to the character page. Either way, you don't have to do it twice.

Edit: Am I remembering that right? Now that I think about it I can't remember if STO does make you do it twice...I think I am going mad.

Also, niether games make you login again to switch characters which is actually insanely annoying for people who like to have a few alts.

You have to log in at the launcher, and are taken directly to character selection. Then you have to login again when switching characters.

I'd prefer a system like LotRO or AoC where you login once, either at the launcher or in game, and then can switch your characters all you want without being logged out in between.

I'd also prefer if the launcher would patch before you login, I don't really get why I need to log in before it starts patching, especially since STO is f2p now.

To the OP, and all who may be intrested. May I present LastPass which in a nutshell auto fills and manages your passwords across ALL of the sites you traffic. And the encryption is done on your end on your computer so if LastPass was TRIBBLE your passwords are safe. Check it out.

I'd suggested something a bit like this a long time ago, except that it would be a function of the Captain's Table when visiting Aenigma.

In addition to just Captain swapping, you would be able to visit your other Captains on the same account, trade with them, train their boffs, and other such things.

launcher login i don't mind so much, it's every time i have to switch characters that it gets annoying. that's one thing fairly unique to STO. others i've played you just go to character select and right back into the game.

why do you have to be logged out to change characters? or have to log back in?

I have yet to see an mmo that allows you to save the password and I've played a lot of them, most will let you save the user id but you still have to type in the password. I see nothing wrong with that.
I can only imagine the hundreds of service tickets that would be generated for tech support due to unauthorized account access, whether it be hacks, a mischievous "friend" or relative or god only knows what else, simply because it was too easy to get into that user's account, an unnecessary headache that they are avoiding by simply requiring you to enter the password each time you log in.
We already have enough problems with 3rd world "gold" spammers trying to infiltrate the game without giving them such an easy inroad.
This is a multiplayer game that makes heavy use of keyboard action, you are going to be typing anyway unless you're an anti-social TRIBBLE that never interacts with anyone, so the miniscule amount of typing needed to enter your password should be insignificant.
As for the worries about key loggers etc then the individuals in question already have much more serious security problems than have anything to do with this game.
Putting everyone at risk because a few individuals are too lazy to type in a password seems counterproductive to me.

The best option to deal with this annoyance is have a keyboard that supports macros. Simply bind your password to a key. instant fill and enter.

Changing chars wouldn't be so annyoing if the game would save the correct username instead of only saving the cryptic name for pw accounts.

at risk how? as it is more likely for you to have securoty issues from some malware watching what you type in, or some detetive wannabee seeing what keys are worn on your keyboard.

I dont think this will happen because something like a Keylogger could see that the password is saved and the data could be sent to someone who might use your log on details for there own purpose. I personally advise never to save passwords for this reason

Actually a "Save Password" checkbox would prevent a keylogger from compromising your password, as no keystrokes are done.

But... for thoose who are used to working with webservers and web... hosts file ... I wont say more ^^
