I have a friend who is absolutely convinced that you have to be a science officer to survive missions on the Romulan front. But I know there are some who have survived missions. I'd like to hear your opinion on them because I know with my cruiser I don't know if I can beat all those missions without getting something tougher. Thoughts?

Tell your friend to Learn2Play. And no you dont have to be a science officer to survive. I have done it with a TAC in a Crusier, And an ENG in a Escort. And now on my third character for a SCI in a Science ship.

If your friend is talking about the missions in Memory Alpha, then he's wrong. I did a lot of them as a pure tactical officer in an escort and had little to no problems.

I haven't had any issues... and I've been through it as an Engineering officer in both a Cruiser and Escort (I get bored flying just one ship type). With the changes to the Team buffs (firing them off while held), there's no real problems at all for me.

...and most ships don't last near long enough for me to worry about anyway.

I just started on the romulan front tonight. Came in as LCDR 7 and the first patrol was a little tough but pulled it off (being teamed with 2 cruisers and a sci helped there even if the warbirds seemed to really take a liking to me).

Hit LCDR 8 and was able to do a few solo missions just fine, I am a tac officer running an escort with mostly uncommon/rare Mk 4 equipment. 3 packs of rommie BoPs are only slightly tougher than the klingon 3 packs, Rommie escorts are fast and hit hard but are pretty squishy. Warbirds do take a bit of fancy flying and maybe a shield battery but if you blow CRF/attack pattern and dont get spammed with tractors/viral matrix you should be able to get the shields down and a high yield in before the warbird closes on you. The main annoying habit I have seen with the romulans so far is the romulan BoPs love to get in REALLY close making it kinda hard to line up cannons on them. Romulan escorts and warbirds typically just charge straight in so an escort can light em up hard (just expect to be spam reinforcing your front shield).

Your friend is probably referring to the possibility of difficulty with D'deridex warbirds. At times, they will fire Viral Matrix, and if you get too close, they will tractor you in place and pound you. However, two skills can break you loose from either. From your description, I'm going to assume your probably an Engineer in a Cruiser. So, you'll want your Science BO trained and able to use Science Team or your Tactical BO trained and able to use Attack Pattern Omega. Those are (if I recall) the only skills that can be used under the effect of Viral Matrix, and will also break tractor beams.

Also, warbirds can only use VM once every minute or two (VM is the purple globe that comes at you), so after that, they'll try to close and tractor you. Best defense for that is to stay farther than (I think) 4km from them.

However, that being said, without those skills, D'deridex's are beatable, but it takes a bit more finesse than other ships to do so.

My "main" is a Tac Officer who's flown mostly Cruisers with a couple of Escorts from time to time, and I didn't have a great deal of trouble throughout ANY stage of the journey to RA5.

Heck, my Science Boffs haven't even had Science Team until yesterday (after I'd made RA5), and while the Viral Matrix thing can be annoying I obviously made it through that stage just fine. :D

I've never played as a Science Officer, never commanded a Science vessel, not had any training or skills in Science fields and not really concentrated much on my Science BO - and I had no trouble with the Romulans at all.
