HI all. I'm a 1 week noob and enjoying it so far. I'm a LT7 and still in the Miranda class. I'm picking up a lot of good info on these boards and various other sites. but one thing I cant locate is how exactly I'll be able to buy a new ship. When I hit LT CMDR, will I automatically be able to upgrade to a different ship or will I have to buy it with some form of credits and or currency? I want to make sure I have enough of whatever it is I need to upgraden when the time comes. The last thing I want is to get LT CMDR and realize I have to do a bunch more stuff in order to upgrade.
I'm doing a smattering of different types of missions, but want to make sure I'm doing the right ones. I'm assuming the sector blocks closest to Earth are the noob zones but maybe I'm wrong.
When you rise in rank you get a new ship of the next cvlass for free. Personally I am not worried about buying a ship as I know I get assinged a new one.
When you reach the lvl Admiral Quinn will call you to starbase. He will promote you and give you a certificate for a new ship. You take this up the stair in the shipyard and use the elevator which take you up hand the certifcate to the lt at the desk and choose your new ship.
You must have spent the required number of skill points as well as having got the xp.
Thx guys. I'm pretty familiar with the shipyard. I spend some time there every day drooling.
I guess my next question is "What ship to take at LT CMDR level"? But I know that is just a matter of my own preference. I'm a tac officer, and have to decide between Escort or Cruiser. (I have no use for being a capt of a science vessel.)
If it helps, the escorts are specifically designed for tactical officers, while cruisers are more of an engineering ship. There's nothing wrong with playing a tac officer in a cruiser, and I've seen reports of some people enjoying it immensely, but you'd get the most bang for your buck in an escort.
If you take the escort for free, you could always purchase an extra cruiser later in the game - energy credits are plentiful.
