Sever not responding

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Ok, I can now log in and play the game, problem is I keep dying and stalling and getting server not responding (and over 75% of the time they are related....). I accept it may be my firewall, could be the server, my ISP and a whole host of other stuff, but how do I actually track down which one of these it is? Having a dual core I wonder is there some sort of programme it is safe to download to keep a track of what is going on in parallel with the game to find out where the lag and lack of responsiveness is coming from? Do the developers have anything to check this sort of thing? If it helps, I can often log in and start playing fine for a while, but if I take a break for a few minutes it basically stops and I have to turn it off as the game becomes unplayable...

    it means you have a problem on your side, either with traffic shaping, or a restriction due to your firewall/router.

    If you can manage other MMO's fine, such as wow, DDO etc, then its probably a firewall/router problem.

    Ok.. I have no problems with other MMO's (though thinking back CoH was often a bit laggy at times...)

    I have a Belkin ADSL 2+ wireless G and ver UK.1144
    I use Pandasoft internet Security 2009
    ISP is Talk-Talk

    Suggestions which one to go for first?

    Check in this order.

    Talk talk
    Security software
    talk-Talk (they are the WORST ISP in the UK that has ever existed.)
    Router settings
    talk talk

    Did i mention check talk talk?

    Goign by what you say and your nettest results, its definitly an ISP issue. Sorry to say.

    I recently moved house and have to use talk talk until this old exchage gets upgraded.

    They throttle almost all bandwidth between 5 pm and 1 am. Sometimes they throttle almost 24 hours if it gets busy on weekends.

    Try using http://www.megaupload.com/?d=F6PZW83P and check the results. It wont be 100% accurate as its tuned to U.S lines, but it will give a good indication.

    from talk talk own member page

    http://www.talktalkmembers.com/content/view/58/68/
    Currently TalkTalk do not apply Bandwidth Capping although they monitor excessive broadband usage and have the ability to apply it under their fair use policy. They do however run a strict Traffic Shaping policy which applies to all members

    Well, a couple of points to add in...

    1) I managed to play for about 2 hours this morning, a little banding, but nothing spectacular.
    2) The Lackey System stuffs me with server not responding no matter when I go in to complete the mission (going to see if this is a bug in a sec)
    3) Omar system just seeming to do the same.

    OK, which provider should I be with if Talk-Talk are naff, do not the others do the same, and how do I talk to them and get them to stop it?

    Seems like it is not my computer at least.....

    Hello Guys

    I can play this game fine due the hours of 9am to about 5pm here in australia but after that is can't play at all due to i can't log on or i do log on and play for 30sec then get a server not responding then dc. I'm not with this talk talk i'm with telstra bigpond and i think it has something to do with the game server. If they want ppl to keep play this game they have better do something about it.

    I have exactly the same problem - no real problems during daytime (UK - 9am - 5pm ish) but after 6pm I get logged off every 20 seconds or so and the game is unplayable. I am in the UK and don't use Talk Talk but I use Sky hub (which I have connected with Ethernet for faster connection). I have done net test and all ok, and can run other online games such as WOW, LOTRO etc with no problems. Help!

    Rubber banding getting nightmarish at times, guess I am only going to be playing this game on Sundays between about 8 and 11 GMT. Most if not all of it is in instances, and the last in a run of instances is usually unplayable and I have to quit. It also doesn't help to either leave the instance, log off or reload.

    This suggests to me that something else is in play than just my ISP but I found no specific information on the bug forum for the ones giving me grief. Last one in Hide and Seek for example goes to server not responding almost immediately and stops dead until I get disconected.

    Any suggestions on to how or what to say to my ISP? I play CoH, LoTR, WoW and have played others with no problems. This suggests either something very specific to me and my machine and the way it interacts with ST or something wrong with the servers and my ISP's interaction with it.

    I have gotten today 'server not responding' 4 to 5 times and disconnects in the last 5 minutes. Here is my 'nettest' results below. Please note this just started acting up today, it was perfectly fine yesterday. I ran a network diagnostic on my system so there is nothing wrong on my end.

    I log in and the patch does nothing but sit there and not patch;

    I ran this net test but cant figure out how to copy and paste my results; pretty much all my ports say 52Kb/sec next column says between 2 and 4 Kb/sec next column is 54 Kb/sec then the number 500

    I have done some speed tests upload and download and have great speed so I have no idea what the problem is;

    Cryptic says they think it is my modem; the modem company and my internet provider all confrence networked with me and they say my modem and upload download is fine; so basically I am screwed;

    Cryptic says its my provider/modem; and my provider/modem guys say it is the game.

    any help you can provide would be appreciated.

    I dont have a firewall; my securty settings are set to low; I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game; nothing works; I played just fine before the friday before last; about the 23rd of februarys patch with no lag or issues of any kind.

    Well, I am going nowhere fast here, server not responding is happening more than actually playing atm.....

    However, the patch downloaded and installed in under 10 seconds.... Why do I get the feeling this has nothing to do with my end.....

    Take at look at my new section that includes Ping Plotter and Wireshark for monitoring and diagnostics. I'll continue to expand these sections with more information but what I have now should point you in the right direction.

    Well, I updated everything, turned settings down, the lot. Managed to get on last night for a while and mostly it was fine. I fought the crystaline entity for example with no lag at all and over 30 people in the instance at around 18:00-20:00 GMT. This suggests it is probably not my computer folks.... However, whenever I go into a high use area like the Sirius Sector at least half of the instances lag me to death or go to server not responding until I have to log out, Lackey being a prime example. It is 07:00 GMT on a Sunday morning here, not exactly a high use time in the UK so I would doubt it is being throttled atm.... I am also using the european server proxy. This is just not working properly. Now there was mention of different ports being used for different maps? Does this apply to instances? And if they are being blocked, why does it let me on the map in the first place and why can I occasionally get some response?

    Next time you get lag and disconnect issues, pop into #STO or #STOQA in IRC. See if I'm online and I'll go to your specific instance (server and port) and see what it is like from my connection.
