Class trouble!

I can't decide what to play. I'm currently a LC7 Eng/Cruiser. The other ships and classes look cool too, maybe even a combo. I guess I could level one of each, but I am still stuck with this feeling that ENG/Cruiser shouldn't be my main...

Did any of you have trouble finalizing on a class/ship?

My main is an Eng/Cruiser officer, and I'm LOVING him - but it's not for everyone. Let me ask you this: Do you like anything about either Engineering, or Cruisers?

I ask because, while I haven't tried it, I've heard good things about mixing up the Tactical/Engineer and Escort/Cruiser combos. Apparently Tactical Officers in Cruisers can dish pretty good amounts of pain, but just have a really hard time dieing by comparison to Escorts. I've also heard that Engineers in Escorts can be quite thrilling, as you lose some damage output by comparison to a Tactical officer, but your survivability is significantly extended.

I also remember reading a few weeks ago, that there was a fad going around to play Tactical Officers in Science Vessels. Apparently the buffs/debuffs along with the added survivability, but your DPS from being Tactical make you a crazy rediculous jack-of-all-trades, even if you ARE a master of none.

    Hope this helps some!

Tac/Science sounds interesting. I went with ENG because in beta I liked deploying the turrents and generators. So when we went live I just rolled ENG. However, I could just as easily Skill/equip BOffs to deploy turrents and generators. Oh well.

As far as cruisers, I've been a trekkie forever and am most familiar with cruisers. When I think of being a Starfleet Captain I think of cruisers. So it's a purely aesthetic choice, and I should think about branching out!

I got lucky in that I got to try out a lot of combos during closed and open beta. I basically decided on the class and ship type separatelly. I found i liked the Tactic best for my Captain. And fell in love witht he Science Ship. So it was natural that I rolled a Liberated Borg Tactical Captain who (new) flies a Reconnaissance Science ship as her Flagship. And tinkers with a prototype Deep Space Science ship as a weapons testing platform from her time in the Starfleet Ship Bureau. (A ships make with lots of different parts. Which looks nothing like any of the Deep Space class ships).

As my next two character I started an Engineer/Cruiser Captain. and a Tactical/Escort Captain. I didn't do the obvious combos during beta. My new main is the Engineer/Cruiser Captain. He just has sort of cliked with me. I've found you can't do a wrong combo in terms of game place. Each combination has it's own unique synergy. My advise is to pickout what you like to play and go with that. There will be times you'll think you make a mistake and will want to reroll. But stick with it for a while beyond that. You might find you really liking it.

I too found the T2 Cruiser a bit frustrating at times, and I I doubted the combo. But I stuck with it because I had my eye on the endgame (i.e. the Galaxy and Soverien classes). Once I hit the T3 Heavy Cruiser things got better. More firepower did the trick. He's now at Command 8, and will probably hit Captain sometime this weekend. (Want's his Galaxy cruiser).

My main is Eng/Science. Good survivability and plenty of dirty tricks to use.

My primary alt is Tac/Cruiser. Still at mid-LCDR, so not really in a position to evaluate the combo.

My what-the-heck? alt is Sci/Escort. Play it mostly for yucks and change-of-pace. Dies much more frequently. :o (Didn't get the chance to play either science track or escort during Beta, and I was waiting on my TOS Constitution and Joined Trill during headstart.)

Gym "I'm coming to the conclusion that I don't really have the mentality to fly an Escort." Quirk

I have a Tactical but went Science Ship after finding I was healing everyone in my group all the time. It's worked out good and I don't have any desire to try out a small crew Escort or a sluggish Cruiser. It does though kinda suck that with the level cap I can never train a Tactical Officer in any of the space skills I have unlocked (due to only being able to have a max of a LT BO)... but really, usually the difference between II and III skills are much to worry about.

It would be nice to be able to train in any skill you unlock regardless of the main's class... but that's how the game is....

My RA5 is Engineer/Deep Space Science and that works out quite well for getting aux power up to 125 for Tyken's Rifts while keeping weapons power up around 115-120, good survivability, etc.etc. this is a really good combo imo.

I also have a Scientist Klingon that's splitting Science with Tactical in his BoP, Scientist in highest and lowest, Tactical in 2nd highest and Enginner in 2nd lowest.

Just to add my two cents, I played open beta with eng/cruiser since it looked like the rest of my family seemed to be splitting tac/sci careers between them, but then my kid brother came on a mission with me and wiped out the orions I was fighting in no time, so I decided my primary would be tac/cruiser which I am currently enjoying... I do miss the ability to lay turrets and stuff, but the extra firepower on my cruiser is nice... My next alt will be a liberated borg engineer who will fly all three ships pretty evenly, maybe with emphasis on science since I'm not really touching those ships right now...

I rolled science not really knowing much about the classes, he was a Vulcan, so Science fit. I split my Lt. time between the Miranda and Connie, so when Lt. Cmdr hit, I tried the Escort. It was a lot of fun, and completely a different mind set fighting then the Connie. Since ships are cheap and money abundant, I bought one of other two. I tried them pretty equally through Lt. Cmdr level. They all had pro's and con's. In the end, I felt the cruisers turned too slow for me to enjoy, and the science ship really added fun and built on what I had rolled. When I was promoted to Cmdr, I took the science vessel, and am LOVING it. I will probably keep that train the rest of the way through with him.

I just rolled my second fed character. I made him Tactical, and will probably do the same thing during Lt. Cmdr. Right now, he is enjoying his Connie though.

And since I learned about those blue phasers leveling with you, I might have to keep those all the way through to Admiral. At least one set <grin>

    I'm RA5 and STILL having trouble :)

Tactical Officer flying Escort, Cruiser and Science ship. Will likely end up with all 6 admiral level ships.
