I love Split Beam rifles. There is no other weapon that compares to this specific type in ground PvP- especially when coupled with a weapon that can Expose. Now, I have a love/hate relationship with Split Beams for this reason. I support variety in MMO's and would love this game to cater to various playstyles, right down to weapon preference based on effects/looks/etc.
However, as previously stated, Split Beam is the frosting on my Captain's cake. I really have no other reason not to use split beam as my main weapon. I'd like feedback from you guys, whether it be similar feelings or alternative, equally effected weapon combinations.
I want to love Sniper Rifles, for example, so that's usually my offhand for a hard hitting knockback on runners. However, if I could somehow keep my Sniper Rifle as my main weapon without gimping my damage, I'm all ears.
Some of you may be wondering why I care so much. I like winning. Sometimes I like winning so much that I'll forfeit personal preference to be on top. I'm just a competitive player in MMO PvP aspects.
Compression pistols: They deal single target damage. Their alt fire has high DPS. They Knockback. They are Exploit. The cooldown time on their alt fire is so low that you can constantly switch between two of them and spam alt fire. You can move while using the alt fire = you can sprint and jump while doing so.

I like pistols. I'm going to try this. My latest offhand is actually a pistol instead of the usual sniper, but it has a chance to expose. I though this would be good with my split.
The exploit damage on compression pistols is so low, you might not be able to kill your target. Also, the recharge is so fast, it's hard to keep up basic DPS through lag, the game client ignoring your keypress, and all the other fun factors of ground PvP.
Split beam rifle, as mentioned, is like sniper rifle only AoE. All it gives up is a slight increase in recharge (12 secs vs. 10) and the loss of the knockback. Nothing comes close.
(At least there are debates over best expose weapon. I like the pulse rifle personally.)
Yes I'm mostly just annoyed by the have to stand still to use alt fire, which means someone is going to start palmstrike/riflebutt spam you. Rather than staying mobile with the pistols and be the one spamming palmstrike.

Yep. Depending on single or multiple opponents I switch in pistols or rifles.
Against 1-2 opponents, I need more exploit openings - also depends on my team.
It's hard to hate the split-beams. You can alt fire them on the run, their melee is spammable and can be used on the run. As a Science Captain I just need to lay down a string of AoE exposes and watch the fireworks.
ive topped charts consistently with pretty much every weapon combo you can think of, the split beam isnt as special as people make it out to be and I personally dont care for it.
For expose weapons I think there's a pretty reasonable variety.
For exploit weapons on maps that consist mostly of narrow corridors and a maximum of 5 enemy players, you can't beat the Split Beam. If Cryptic comes out with some new maps/objectives then you might see some of the other expose weapons come into favor, but I'm not really holding my breath for that.
I roll with the best phaser Stun gun / sniper rifle combo. If i get into a good team i replace the sniper rifle and rock with 2 phaser stun guns or phaser stun gun / wide beam gun combo. Found a disruptor stun pistol and been using the teteyon stun pistol sometimes too.
I carry a phaser arcwave assault weapon and a tetryon splitbeam rifle; it's easily the best weapon combo I have ever taken into ground PvP.
I have to get a bit closer than I would like to use the arcwave, but the wide cone and decent knockback makes it all worth while
As for the tetryon rifle; the arcwave does not hurt that much, so the chance to do extra shield damage with my follow up attack is most welcome.
---EDIT---
Since typing this I realised that, by using a phaser weapon, I am adding to the hold spam problem that I hate so very, very much. Am now trying a disruptor arcwave weapon with added DoT effect.

Plasma, especially.
And sometimes sniper rifles when I knew I was going to have one target.

I find that it is a good, multipurpose combo.

It's primary attack his for more damage then any other weapon as well.
I am going to play around using one as an opener for my Split Beam to see if it's any good in PvP.
I like having a Stun pistol but it kind of sucks if you stun someone and they aren't exposed.
