How many ships can you own?

I have 6 ships currently and Lt Laural won't sell me anymore. The 'Buy' button is greyed out.

Is 6 the limit or is it a bug?

You can have a total of 8 ships per character.

    Does that go by rank?

What rank are you? I just hit captain and I have a miranda, TOS conny, 3 science ships and an escort and the buy button wasn't grey to me. Just couldn't afford a galaxy class yet.

At commander I could have 6, at captain I have 7. I assume Admiral has 8.

I'm max level at L45 Rear Admiral. Max ships is 8 in total.

Ok. I am Commander now. So I guess 6 is my limit.

Kind of sucks that I will have to start discharging ships. We should be able to keep them.

I'm guessing we'll get to have more when they update the c-store.

Why? What purpose does a ship serve just sitting in your stable of ships?

    2 purposes

    1) When you want to play with lower level friends
    2) Appearances... I love the looks of some lower level ships and I really hate giving them up to make room for a more powerful ship.

To answer the initial question, I think you start off being permitted 3 ships and it increases by 1 every rank you gain.

Collection for one thing. I wanted to spend my money once I got to Admiral on all Ships.

    Oh well.

    To use them.
    To collect them
To keep them since they are part of the game and we put time into fitting them out.

Why would you want to delete them?

Woulda made more sense if we actually had to buy them and could sell them on some sort of market.

Ummm... Maybe I'm misunderstanding you here, but you DO actually have to buy your ships... Not the first one after you've ranked, but any others you want... I personally would love to collect my ships as well, and I think it sux that I'll have to start giving them back, and not even getting a return on them... I mean seriously, if you take the time and save your money to buy that Corvette, you're not just going to give it away for nothing when you're ready to buy the Ferrarri...

To clarify, you get 1 (one) free ship upon every promotion. If you want to have any additional ships however you have to pay energy credits for them.

Awesome...sell your fed ship to the Ferengi, who then sell it to the Klingons.

    J/k...I know what you meant.:p

How would flying a lower level ship make flying or fighting with lower level friends any different? Aside from fewer slots you can still use the higher level equipment, and the stats on the actual equipment (ie engines) changes when you level. An engine with a +7.5 turn rate at LC turns into +18 turn rate at commander, etc. I see absolutely no reason to lower your ship level to "play" with lower levels. Do certain missions or areas decline you entrance based on your ship type?

Other than nostalgia there is no reason to save a ship. Yes we take time fitting them, but when I get a new ship I strip it of parts and put them into a new ship, sell them, or mail them to a lower leveled toon of mine or a friend. However, I'm sure others do not do this and use their "shipyard" to act as an extra storage area for parts they want to keep. Without a cap on the amount of ships this would eventually create more server space drain and make things "untidy". I am just happy we can have more than one at a time at all so I can have multiple types of each level to play around with different types. I agree that it would be nice to have a trade in value, but what about the "free" ship upgrade per level. You shouldn't get a trade in for that.....

Why would you strip your ship?

Why would you destroy something you paid for?

If keeping a couple of extra ships on a list is a huge server strain this game is doomed. lol

Ships and Aircraft are decommissioned every day. You think the military is just going to sit on stuff while it rusts away? I wanted to be able to have 1 of every type of playable ship myself but after thinking about the resources involved to store that information, I think I would rather have extra character slots that could have a lower number of ships that could be different from my primary.

I would like to see the button renamed to decommission though. Would make more sense.
