This is my first post on the forums. I bought the game on thursday and have come up against several issues stopping me from playing the game. I updated graphics drivers and was able to play the game on the first evening.
The next day I opened the patcher and it came up with 'unable to authenticate'. I checked the forums and other people have been able to fix this issue by 'waiting 2 to 5 minutes then connecting again'. However after several 15 minutes waits between reloads and reboots it still says the same thing. I made sure it wasnt blocked in the firewall, in the end I rebooted the router ( a 20Mb line that serves a student halls so a bit naughty) and was able to login in.
Once logged in I often get stuck with 'connecting to login server' and if managing to pass that, 'server connection lost' which kicks me back to the menu. I saw several posts that suggested loading a different character, which sometimes works, but when I load the main character it will nearly always fail to load.
Again, once at this stage if I restart the router I can normally login and play. After about 10-20 minutes I lose server connection and go back to the menu all over again. What can I do? I'm very sure I still have good connection, I played arma and cod today online and have pings below 50. I equally think its unfair to my housemates and impractical to have to restart the router when I want to play STO.
Any advice would be appreciated, when I've managed to log in and play, I've really enjoyed the game. But after only 2 days of repeated frustration I'm beginning to lose the will.
Couldn't say, the modem router remains locked away since its uni property. All I can do is turn the power on and off. I assume that if indeed its a problem with the router, then there is very little I can do about the situation?
well itis either the router or since the game uses ports 7000-7500 and you are on a university network, it could be the univeristy traffic shapping security software is detecting the game traffic and mistaking it for p2p traffic and locking it out,
Assume (correctly) that I am a tad on the noobish side when it comes to all things technical. Ruling out buying my own phone line, since I've checked and its way too expensive for half a years worth of playing and every other game plays okay, is there a fix I can use for STO. Changing ports? or maybe getting dongle just for STO?

Contact the IT department, and tell them what ports you need unblocked and why. If they say no, then sorry. No STO for you on campus.
I have been able to get ports 7000-7500 opened and have since enjoyed a good bit of playing. Very much enjoying the game. I do still disconnect often, although am guessing this'll be due to server at peak times.
I am still suffering quite badly from 'unable to authenticate' at the laucher screen. Most peoples post on this subject say it works after 10mins, but does not seem to for me. Anything further I can do, or am I just going to have to grab a game when I'm lucky?

Did they open TCP 7000-7500 for all destination IPs or just a range for the STO servers? If just the servers, what range did they use?
I asked the IT support gent to open ports 7000-7500, to which he told me that he has. I'm not sure whether quite what that means in relation to your question. My apologies, this is a little above me. Is there something I need to ask the IT support gent further to find out?

If you didn't give him a network range and just asked for the ports, you should be fine.
I asked because in my packet captures I found a 208.95.187.73 IP for a controller server. I've seen some people give a network range that didn't include this host IP.
If you want to dig into it yourself, I added some packet capture information to my FAQ. A warning that analyzing packet captures does take some experience to do in order to find problems, but I did provide some examples for people to get them started.
THanks for the help, will just sit back and play when I can then. Since I only understand about 3 in every 4 words you're saying, I'll skip the port analysing thanks

STO uses all ports in the range 7000-7500
I have sniffed ip s from 208.95.184.xx to 208.95.185.xx while playing the game.
