Why is my router messing up STO?

SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
I'm using a Linksys WRT54GS v6 with DD-WRT mini firmware. This setup has served me incredibly well for EVERYTHING prior to STO. Warcraft, Guild Wars, torrents, VoIP, Skype, even hosting conferences via webcam. I've had no problems at all until STO.

With STO, I get terrible lag spikes every 60-120 seconds, often leading to a disconnect.

I'm connected via ethernet cable. Direct connection to my modem resolves the issues.

Why is STO the only network traffic that is being screwed up by my router?

EDIT: Nettest.exe shows perfect results.

I would recommend trying a firmware update on the router and see if that helps.

    Linksys WRT54GS Neutered Models

Version 5.0 Serial number begins with: CGN7
Version 5.1 Serial number begins with: CGN8
Version 6.0 Serial number begins with: CGN9

On the neutered models listed above, Linksys reduced the flash memory and the RAM compared to previous versions of these models, thus the term "neutered". DD-WRT Micro is one of the only 3rd party firmwares available for these models. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FLASH ONE OF THESE WITH DD-WRT mini. Having said that, if you have one of these neutered models, you'd still be much better off selling it and getting something else that is a supported device. The forum is filled with questions on these neutered models. Lots of bricks. And debricking one of these will most likely require a JTAG. See: JTAG in the Glossary BrainSlayer himself does not encourage using one of these routers. With the limited available memory, it really doesn't pay for the developers to put a lot of time into making firmware for these models. As BrainSlayer wrote in a forum post, "most problems on v5 routers are caused by out of memory situations which can result in a freezed router". This applies to all neutered routers.

Vista and I assuming Win7 does a network check on wireless connections every 60 seconds. this can cause lag and disconnects on some wireless connections.

    See if this applies

Haha, good catch. I'm actually running the micro firmware (hence the reason the router even works at all :D), but good catch none the less. Sorry for the mix-up.

I'm on a direct wired connection to my router, with no wireless adapters installed. I can't imagine this would be an issue.

If you ever want to step up check newegg now and then. They frequently put the WRT54GL on sale and it runs DD-WRT like a dream. Best home router I've ever owned.

I looked over the website and found several places were the guy that created DD-WRT said he doesn't recommend those routers at all.
BrainSlayer himself does not encourage using one of these routers.

Yeah, I know, I used to have a WRT54G v4 (which was the best model for DD-WRT at the time) but it kicked the bucket and the GS was all I had lying around. Like I said, it was working perfectly for every other game, so I don't understand why it was giving me problems with STO.

Either way, I found a refurbished Netgear WPN824NAR yesterday which I picked up on the cheap and seems to be working well. Not the best router in the world, but it seems to be getting the job done quite well. I still have the WRT54GS, so if someone has any ideas on how to get it working with STO, it might be worth looking into. Could have something to do with the general lag/disconnect issues that people have been experiencing.
