5970, pros it's pretty much the fastest single card and has 2 gigs of vid mem, cons it's pricey and large (I do mean large) and power consuming. Other than that anything is fair game, though generally it seems the 260's been recommended for STO due to it's better than normal compatibility compared to some of the other cards. It's a cheap enough card if you want to just dive in, though if you want to play other things I'd do a bit more research first. Also the 260 is an aging card and doesn't support dx11.

Whats the size of your power supply and what CPU are you running?

Not much sense in jumping into any brand of high end card if your CPU ends up your bottle neck and or your PSU is not large enough to support it.

Assuming your machine can support it. A GTX 260 is a pretty good bang for the buck card for STO.

I use a 9500GT with no issues... and it runs fine on a system with a small power supply. (mine is one of the stock Dell 300W PSU's). It's also cheap. (under $100)

The Computer Enthusiast site Tom's Hardware has a nice article on STO graphics performance, with a nice breakdown of their recent graphic card recommendations...
However, if you want to push STO's fidelity to maximum at full resolution, you're going to need some decent graphics hardware. At 1280x1024, you'll want a GeForce 9600 GT, at minimum. For 1680x1050, a Radeon HD 4850 will do the trick. At 1920x1200, a GeForce GTS 250, GTX 260, Radeon HD 4890, Radeon HD 5750, or better should be on your shopping list. At 2560x1600, consider lowering the detail a bit, because none of the cards we've tested here could hit a solid 30 FPS at maximum settings.

I also had a 8800 GTS that died on the 2nd day of head start.

Replaced it with a 5770 Ati instead, had no problems since.

What does concern me tho is everything was fine on the 8800GTS also until it died, so I have a element of concern that STO could just as easily kill my 5770 just as unexpectedly.
Atleast its covered under warranty atm since its brand new, but I've been running STO using the limited frames option of 30fps and the framesleep to reduce GPU load just incase.

I'm glad to hear that the 9500 GT works well on a 300 W PSU. I'm trying to get a friend of mine who has a lower-end 4-year-old PC to join us in STO, and this budget card is exactly what I think he needs now. Thanks a bunch!

I am using a Saphire ATI Radeon 5770 1GB card, and it works beautifully for me. I haven't had a single problem with it, and I run atLEAST 50fps throughout most situations on max settings @1280x1024. I've also tried higher resolutions using my HDTV, and found no noticeable difference in performance.

It's a very good card for a very good price. From what I hear though, the GTX 260 is the best overall performer for STO specifically. Its moderately more expensive, draws more power and lacks DX11 support, but it should do just fine for the task at hand.

I just got my gt 9500 card and a 450w Power Unit (to replace my 300 one that came stock in the hp I have) and a dual fan card that goes in an expansion slot for 124 bucks out the door from Tiger Direct. Istallation was easy (Did have to do some fiddling to make one power cable connection as the new one was 2 inches short) If you are looking for cheap, thats a pretty good deal.

Whatever you decide on don't get an ATI AS OF YET! Since some of the recent patchwork my 5850 experiences slowdowns in some systems with alot of nebula and asteroids which used to be fine but due to the patch work it results in a huge FPS drop. Not to mention the game is made for/affiliated with nVidia.

Loftis is incorrect. The slow down bug he's talking about has been shown on this very forum to be vendor agnostic, both Nvidia and ATI cards suffer from it, it's a game issue. In fact, testing here at home has shown the bug to manifest on Radeon 5870, 4870, Geforce 8800GTS and GTS250 so far. If I could test on even more cards I would, but that's all I have here to test with.

Additionally, I have shown in another thread how to fix the bug when it happens. Alt-tab out of the game and jump back in. Obviously, this fix is rather dependent on you not being in the middle of a fire fight. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out a way around that little problem :p

    9800GT
    AMD Phenom X4 9750
    4GB mem

Running STO in 1680 x 1050 with v-settings fully maximized for hours on end without any issues.

I'm considering upgrading my (ancient) GeForce 6800 to a GeForce GTX 260. The 6800 will run the game and looks pretty but I have almost all of the settings set as low as they'll go and I'd really rather "see" the game better. My only real concern about the 260 however is the lack of support for Direct X 11. How big of an issue is this likely to be in the future...?

save yourself some money, when it comes to £=gfx ati wins hands down.

For pound for pound u can't get better than ati.
two 4850/90's 1gb in crossfire would cost u 140 quid, now show me any gfx card under 250 quid that can beat the proformance of that setup.

    /edit

ofc res depentant, but 4850/90s in xr is the cheapest high end gaming u can get for 1280x1080 and under

Crossfire for 1280x1024 (not 1080, that would be just odd, 1080 goes with 1920) is silly and unnecessary. A single 4850/4870/4890 is way more then enough for that res.

    yeah i ment 1920x1080 not sure where i got the 1280 from..lol

but regardless, my point sticks there is just no reason to go above a 4890 in crossfire unless u got money to burn and a VERY BIG monitor.

I would recommend an Nvidia, GTX 260 or higher.
Simply for the fact that STO has PhysX running at the heart of it, and should Cryptic see the wisdom of implementing futher PhysX goodies, an Nvidia card is where its at.

Ok, this post is a bit unsettling to me now.
I run an AMD Phenom II quad core (945) with 6GB low lat DDR3, Dual 500Gb WD drives in a raid 0, with a xfx radeon 4850 at 1920x1200 res on a samsung 24" monitor and i get MAYBE 8fps on ground missions. Space is much better, but in a fight even it gets choppy. Sound is an Xfi Titanium Fatal1ty in hardware mode. So what gives? Drivers are all up to date, any advice?
