Away team parties have the same limitations as parties in space - that is to say, there can only be 5 people in the team. For Away Teams, you're allowed to fill the other 4 slots (you take up one) with NPC Bridge Officers. You don't always have to take the same 4 (no matter what, you're always prompted to make sure you have the officers you want to bring along), but you can only bring 4 officers with you on an Away Team.
This number changes based on the number of actual players on the team as well - if you have two players doing a Ground Mission, then the two of you have to decide which 3 bridge officers out of the entire pool gets to go along. If there are three players, only 2 can be NPCs, and so on.
However, none of that inhibits you from having multiple Ground Teams set up and switching out as necessary to fit the mission. Though I am not, as of yet, aware of any way to change Away Team members while in a mission.
I'm quite sure there's an way, though can you naturally do it, nope. While it would be fun to run around with a group of 10, I'd want to least be fighting 100 people at once then.
yes you can have more than 4. I have the ability to call down 2 security officers but only do it as a fight starts or they beam back up.
That's a Tactical Officer ability that only spawns temporary, generic Security officers. Kind of like turrets that most Engineering officers get, or support drones.
Not quite permanent away team members, and not exactly what I think the OP was looking for.
I've lagged out once or twice and beamed down with an incomplete "security" team. A few seconds after clicking "request reinforcements" I get my normal away team + security team. Granted, the crummy gear on the security team didn't really help that much, and no special abilities.
Only happened twice for me back right after launch (when there was a lot more lad during peak times)
