If I see a ship in space, or a player in the Starbase, let me be able to right click on them and then hit a button to bring up a 360x360 rotatable view of the person or ship so I can check out their uniform and physical appearance or ship design and paint scheme. We spend so much effort specializing ourselves but the game gives us very little opportunity to enjoy the variation in game.
yes id like to see this
id like to see their weapons and equipment load out as well
oh pls no... NOOOO....
pls cryptic, devs and all those almighty beings behind you:
never... NEVER build in any feature or allow/support any third party site to build up an "EQ-check"...
i know its "the bad word" but... mind WoW...
the EQ-check destroyed the way of normal gaming in groups completely...
"this item not good enough to join raid" - "Raidleader, u checked that guys equip REALLY? check him again!"
*shrugs while remembering hundreds of this situations*

Ah so we can figure out that the guy does not have good enough gear until after he gets into the raid and wipes us 10 times. I like that.
i like the ability to see peoples ships and chars (assuming i really want to see the chars 9x out of 10 they a re running around in armor and TRIBBLE that makes them look like something out of some other Sci Fi Computer game)
the easiest way to do this would me to allow me to target them and then hit a key that would center the camera on them and zoom in and rotate.
Simple camera lock centred on the players ship would work fine.
As for equipment load outs, I would'nt mind a similar system to EVE where you can save and post fittings. A simple option to allow people to 'scan' you would work but capable of being toggled off if the person dosent want to be scanned.
I would be thrilled if this was some kind of Sensors/Tricorder function to scan a target and get this kind of detailed info about a friend/foe. I still roll my eyes when all I get is a glorified compass pointer when i use said items.
Well... You could always oh dunno... *shrug*... Ask him?
A system that lets you view other peoples equipment creates elitism.
People tend to lie about things like that... seriously it happened in WoW all the time when they advertised their DPS in LFG channel. They would usually overstate their DPS output by at least 30%. Gear score pretty much ended that. Yes it promotes elitism but if you do not want to put in the time to get the gear (or experience which is actually the real thing people are looking for) to do something, then sorry kids, you do not get to go.
Right now nothing in STO requires outstanding equipment or skill as everything end game is just a massive zerg-fest requiring no coordination or strategy other than "fire everything you got, then wait for a rez after you die." So this is pretty much a non-issue.
But if it ever does require coordination and strategy, which in turn requires experience, gear and equipment is usually the best and most reliable way to tell if someone is going to royally TRIBBLE everyone else over once the raid/instance begins.
Good gear is (presently) very easy to get. Anyone who is not willing to put in the very minimum effort required to get good gear should not expect to team up with players who do put in the effort. Those of you who are afraid that others will see that you are too lazy to put in a little effort can simply continue to cyber in the Captains Table.
Ability to inspect other players and see their gear: double plus good.

and just because they got it doesn't mean they are good. you don't need purples to be good at this game, there is not skill checker to see if someone sucks.
Would be nice to check out another ship, without flying up there aft and looking like a perv

It is the most efficient way of telling if somebody is skilled or experienced in coordinated instances/raids. If you have a better method, then say so. Otherwise, I am not going to just invite people blindly just because they say they are good.

You can do your entire ship and inventory in purple doing nothing but explores. You dont need to be on any setting higher then normal. And if you are really selective you can do it all with non combat scanning missions.

I remember this feature from Homeworld, where you could target and view any ship. Then you could pan around it to look at the details. You could hear it's engine noise, and all the background hum, and sometimes garbled communication. It was a neat feature.

Yeah that was a pretty interesting idea.

Pervert!
*scans*
*raises eyebrow and leers*
*clocks out of TSA job and goes home for night*
It creates people who are proud of their "common" equipment, gosh darnit!
This ^^
I can beat quite a number of people who are using AP arrays with green quality phasers. Its all about the skill.
thats exactly the point...
but if eq-check would be available, too many ppl would forget this...

Same here.

So how is someones gear any indication of skill?
QFT.
Got enough of the gear check/gear score crud in WoW.
I have seen such bad behavior in WoW over gear and dmg checks it is unreal.
I don't mind letting people see my ship in some 3d view and my toon as well in that same fashion, but no gear score / gear checking mechanics please.
