I've only played a Sci character and I'm curious: Can all types of players and ships heal others, or is this function reserved solely for Sci players/vessels?
In space, your ship type (and thus bridge officer loadout) matters more than your character class, at least when it comes to healing.
A Tactical Officer flying a Cruiser can use Medical Team (sci heal), Engineering Team (eng heal), Hazard Emitters (sci heal), Extend Shields (eng heal), etc. It may not be the best min/max idea but you can certainly do it.
Ground is another matter. The only true ground "healers" are science, because a Tactical Officers and Engineers can't use science kits, which have the hit point heals.
Flying as an escort in t3 I've equipped both extend shield and hazard emitters.. its really funny to top 200k damage and be the best healer on the team. More fed cruisers need to learn to take advantage of extend shield in keeping their group alive.

For Ground Combat, Science Captains and Brige Officers are the only ones that have a heal power. Everyone has access to "food" and Hyposprays for in and out of combat healing (and yes. Tribbles, too). Engineers have other types of healing. They can heal/recharge personal shields, and cure mechanical debuffs on chracters (like Fuse Armor).

Just to Clarify, it is actually SCIENCE team now, and not MEDICAL team.
Also while on the ground you can use hypo's which will actually heal you, and it's available to all classes.
I cannot remember atm, and don't have access to the game, but don't engy's also get a kit that makes a medical turret that heals? Could be a science officer kit though, and I'm just misremembering.
