I have a friend who just joined the game. I am currently RA1 and want to assist her with some of her story arc missions.

I don't really want to reroll a new character; would it be detrimental in any way to my friend if I go into a shared story arc mission at a higher level?

I.E. would it spawn higher level enemies or bork up her xp gain in any way from me being that many levels higher?

I know I will get little to no rewards myself; that is not an issue to me.

Note- I am only talking story arc or "patrol x sector" missions, not exploration or fleet battles.

You would be much better off rolling a new character, than helping him with a RA one. Many missions would scale to your level, making them pretty much untouchable by a new player, while easy pickings for you.

Plus the experience isn't too balanced for lower level players with higher level ones. You would be taking XP sway from your friend., making his progress slower.

This is speculation and from my CO and in game experience.

I would say you will get higher spawns, but because of the group not your rank. The mission XP should stay the same and that is what you level from over kill XP. I am pretty sure the kill XP is going to drop, but then again no big deal as the mission points are much higher.

I look forward to hearing what your experience is and if I made a close guess or not.

    Good luck.

Or I could be completely off base. Sounds like Kitsume has more first hand knowledge on this.

I have done this quite a bit even with 2 or 3 admirals in group and I can tell ya what to expect...

Timeline missions go unaffected. We are talking total cake walk t1-3, with most being completed in under 5-10mins excluding travel time.

Patrols you will see a couple of extra baddies based on the number in your group but their level won't be scaled to your own.

Fleet instances / DSE's no effect.

Exploration WILL scale in most cases that I have seen.

You will also have to factor in the 5-10 or whatever skill points per kill. He will be getting 1 skill point because you will mop the floor with most of it. So that is the only real detriment. The rest of the XP stays the same.

    Hope that helps.

Storyline missions should be OK to do together. They'll scale up to the number of teammates, but will remain at the dificulty level they were designed to be. Since most of your SP come from the mission rewards, and not the kills, your friend should still be getting a decent amount to level up with.

Don't try and do exploration missions together. They will scale to your level, and make life difficult for your friend.

This is the really, really important piece of information in this thread. Very very important to note. Yes, it's true that being teamed with a Rear Admiral will pull the kill rewards away from the lower-ranked player. But this doesn't really matter.

I've found as long as your friend zones in first to spawn the zone and then you join the group and enter the instance the NPC's will be their level not yours.

I makes no differance, im a ra5 and have been helping a few friends with there missions it has no effect on who zones in first or anyhing the mobs will be there lvl.

The only problem so far is defend sector missions we were in one the other night in the vulcan sector and all the klingons changed to my lvl this was not much fun for the low lvls in the zone so i left

If you want to help but not necessarily kill everything yourself, why not fly one of your older ships? Pull the Miranda class out of mothballs, fit it with some MkIIs and go nuts, I say.

Hmm, I guess my fiance didn't see the option to do this. When I zoned in to do a patrol mission he had already done the night before he didn't see any option to enter the zone. Since then we pretty much solo until we're at the same point again for a few hours then play together until the next time we go out of synch due to my sleepiness some nights rofl.

It could just be bad luck, or it could be intentional.

But I've been caught in some DSE, and gone into some fleet instances...

Been shooting away at groups of -3 or 0, and turned to face the next group, only to realize they were +22.

So I'm pretty sure a lot of places scale, and I don't think the math involves averaging.

I've found that the patrol missions, for some reason, are non-repeatable. You can re-do any of the story-line missions just by warping in. Defend TRIBBLE and exploration missions are repeatable by design. But the patrol missions are special. /shrug

Ah, thats cool, we probably only tried the patrol one as that one was first on my list of missions to do to catch up. But we're having fun. He's 33 now and I'm 29 so I am still a few levels behind him with about 6 missions to do, apart from explorer and defend ones that is.

You won't be able to share the patrol missions but if the mission carrier enters first, the rest of the group can follow.

It's a little twitchy sometimes it won't pop til they reach a certain stage such as beaming to the planet or spotting the first patrol to kill.

But it has been done all the way back to T1.

Hmm, maybe that was the case then. I thought it was weird that I could follow him on explorer missions but he couldn't follow me on patrol. Maybe I was more patient as I do recall it took a bit of time for it to appear but then my success followed his non success so I couldn't tell him what to look for rofl. Maybe next time we can try it again just to see.

It happens at the point where they actually recevie the mission. This happens almost immediately for some patrols but not until a later point for some others (Planet landings sometimes don't start until you get the beam down message) But if they have the system mission and you are grouped you should get the option to join them. This has worked for my wife and I many times where one of us has already completed a mission.

I don't know if who the leader is has an effect on this but we usually let whoever is the owner of the missions be the leader just in case.

i found the trick to the explorer missions is clicking explore system which usually appears as soon as they begin map moving wherever you are in the system if that doesn't work travel to smack dab center of the sector and it will usually show up on the side tab as soon as they pick up the mission for the zone. (not always though but a majority of the time)

Thanks for the replies; it looks as though doing the story missions will work out okay, which was my main concern.

I was figuring on kitting out my old constitution class to fly around with her on these; it should be fun.
