I am a tac officer with a cruiser and enjoy it just fine, but am just curious, can I change to an engineer without having to delete my character or start a new one?
Actually this would be an interesting option down the line somewhere...I can't imagine it's unheard of for a Starfleet officer to start as a scientist and end up in tactical or some such....maybe something for a fee later on?
Ezri Dax went from a Counsellor to a ships Captain, so it can be done. Well she did in the expanded ST universe of books.
That's because we're all "ships Captain", regardless of career branch.
And there really isn't too much different between a Tac officer flying a cruiser, and an Eng officer flying a cruiser. YOUR career doesn't influence ship performance as much as your BOs do.
YOUR career, in regards to ship handling, only influences which Lvl III skills you can teach to your BOs. And Eng officer, despite having Torpedoes 9, can not teach someone High Yield III. Only an Tac officer could.
But otherwise, there's no sense in "retraining" Tac to Eng, unless you want specific abilities when you are on the ground. That's where YOUR career applies, on away missions.

The different classes DO get different skills as they level up. Engineer, for example, gets EPS Power Transfer, Rotate Shield Frequency, and Miracle Worker. Tactical officers do not get those.
Except for in-between season 1 & 2 of TNG. Yes, you know what I'm talking about. When all those main characters traded in the red shirts for yellow ones (yes, I mean you Worf, Geordi, O'Brien, etc.) Just because we don't bring it up in polite conversation doesn't mean that it didn't happen.

That's hilarious! I sort of wonder if that has less to do with the training and more to do with a wardrobe change...
