Crew as it is, is fairly unimportant. The 200 extra crew is pretty meaningless.
However, I would still go Star Cruiser about three hundred times over, because that extra Science BOFF is way, way better than an extra Tactical one. Sorry if you were hoping the Sovvy was actually a good comparison but its not. Its really that much worse.
assault cruiser does have that extra tatical console though which some folks MIGHT decide is better. really it's up to you. you're proably not gonna notice an ensign power much anyway so I'd go with what you think is cooler

IMO there are many useful Science Ensign Powers. I'm only up to Captain 4 so Rear Admirals feel free to orrect me, but Science Team, Hazard Emitters, Polarize Hull, and Tractor Beam are all very useful. From what I've heard Jam Sensors is also quite useful.
Regardless, I'm planning to go with a Sovereign because I do think it looks cooler. That extra Tactical Console will help a bit, but I do think the Star Cruiser is a stronger ship.
It's funny, because in Enterprise they retrofitted phaser cannons on the NX Enterprise. In the new movie the Enterprise also had cannons. Not complaining....just sayin.

The 'phase cannons' mounted on the NX-01 were the first versions of starship phasers, mounted in retractable turrets - not really 'cannons' in the STO sense.
The Enterprise in the 2009 movie is armed with "ball turret phaser banks", which in STO terms could probably be viewed as either turrets or beam arrays.

Enterprise in TMP has 'em too, you can see 'em on the hull in closeups. They're right below the name painted onthe hull.
You have to remember that +30% tactical console only applies to to the base DPS, so you have to decide whether or not it really is worth it.
Personally, that basically small boost in damage isn't worth the tons of surviability you get from that extra Sci BOFF. Not to mention you can put on another Sci console which will make all your Sci BOFF powers even stronger.
Personally, I'll take my extra Hazard Emitters with +13k heal and +30% resist.

Yep, in STO terms, they're all "dual banks" in both the original Enterprise, and in the 2009 Enterprise, except that these movie/show cases, they had dual-banks on both the top and bottom of the saucer, in each of the front and side positions. STO's method of distributing weapons on the ship doesn't match the shows/movies, but the concept of the dual-bank (a pair of ball turrrets) is straight from the on-screen concepts.
Ive no idea just yet , i got a assault cruiser last night , all i can say is i survived mobs solo and killed them off quick , ill test star cruiser perhaps as well later.
Only thing i dislike is the Star Cruisers , they look completely YUCK and the worst in the game , its why i got a assault cruiser lol

Same here...
i would like the Star Cruiser because of the second sience BO

It's a matter of choice and play style. More DPS to turn into close of flying debris and vapor faster. Or more defenses to last longer.
And I wouldn't totally go by the ships database displays in the Ship Requisitions area. They aren't totally accurate. There are somethings that are wrong. For example, it shows the the Deep Space Sience turn rate is higher than the Reconnaissance Science ships. But in reality the Reconnaissance Science ships turns faster.

While I think the base models are pretty bleh looking as well, you can get some GREAT looking combos out of them that just scream "Federation Ship of the Line" at you. I personally found the Avenger saucer and hull with Emissary nacelles and pylons looks rather sweet.
That said, my second Admiral character will be flying escorts instead.

The new Movie is a totally different reality so using that as an example is irrelevant.
I really don't see any issue here.
I use a SC, as I like to support my fleet and have the ability to tank.
Each to his own, its all down to what role you want to play.
As it stands my SC is all Mk X gear and I'm currently in Borg space working towards the Antiproton gear etc...
Later on I may swap to AC if I feel like taking on a new role but at the moment I'm having far to much fun in the new Flagship of the federation.
I find it funny people don't like certain ships because there ugly lol
I tested both,i like the assault more because mostly i come in 1/2/3 on damage in pvp. I outdamage star cruisers mostly, and escorts. Also it looks better, and the survival between them, its nothing. 200 crew you dont notice it. And you allready have enough engineer slots to make you survive. Some setups 2x reverse shield polarity 2x engi team + 2x empts + aux to structual, or even 3x reserve shield polarity. And i got myself hazard emmiters 1 with 9k healing ( only consoles for hazard no sp points left sadly ) And im forced to use science team because of the viral matrix, would rather have an attack ability instead of that one.

No, same turn rate and No, can't use cannons.
Uhhhmmm. Klingons get a BATTLE cruiser, I think you mean the Fed ASSUALT cruiser
And that extra Tac console can = 30% more dmg depending what you put there.
30% more dmg > Ensign Science Boff skill (PvP this may not be so true)

Acctualy it says that it can use cannons. I acctualy think Enterprise-E used them at some point.
Edit: why dont you save up and buy both. thats what I do with Cruisers and Escorts
Technically since you always 'respawn' in perfect health, nothing is relevant.
Unfortunately, Assault Cruisers cannot use cannons. Battle Cruisers can, but only Klingons can fly those.
I have both an Assault Cruiser and a Star Cruiser and in my opinion in this case is:
Extra Ensign Science Boff beats Ensign Tactical Boff
Extra Tactical Console beats Science Console
With that 'balanced' it comes down to whether 200 extra crew beats flying a really ugly ship.
(I just can't stand how the Star Cruisers look... they just look horrible to me
True for the time being - however I suspect that this will not last.
i think the star cruiser is the better ship , but i like the standard cruiser lines of the assault cruiser.
i havent decided whats gonna win out yet

I might be crazy, but to me, the assault had more weapon power. I mean the bar did not go down as fast with 8 phasers banks shooting at once.
I dunno.

All ships are like that. Research Science shisp have an Ensign secondary station. And Heave Escorts have a secondary Ensign Station.

ah ty. I was hoping for LT.com and LT positions for more power use.

So, if they are basically equal, why give the star 200 more men?
Makes no sense to me.
