I can't tell you how many times I've died because I run into a room, there's 1, 2, 3 opponents in there, I start shooting, and what am I firing at???? A fricking turret, or a shield!!!
I've set the "do not target objects" option .... and it still keeps targeting these things!
Anyone been able to get around this? Other than turning off auto-targeting all together, which is crazy at the higher levels?
don't rush in, and plan you're attack. that is how I get past it. same thing I do on my FPS on XBox live. you're best bet is to manually target players. I only use auto when fighting NPCs.
I have seen this too. I did not know there was auto-targeting. I would then manually switch targets, and I would still see shots being fired on a different ship.
The "do not target objects" option is not for turrets or other emplacements, but rather for destructible objects in-game.
But yeah, it can be pretty irritating, but using tab and paying attention to the target name or portrait helps. Then there's those irritating Gorn that are called Mortar and their emplacements called... Mortar.
My suggestion would be to use your eyes and check your fire - I'll look out for you if we're ever in space pvp together and someone hits you with scramble targeting sensors. At that point, I'm firing at you first

Don't get me started on that skill. I get hit with it, the first thing I do is break targeting locks. My teammates, obviously, return the courtesy by trying to kill me for the duration of the effect. Every time. It's never failed yet.
Well, at least in ground pvp it's sometimes really annoying, as those standard garden gnome style characters hide behind their turrets and I tab tab tab and can't target them and then I try to click them but that's impossible too as you always seem to select the thing that is in front of the guy.

Hmm, so to dominate in PvP, make an alien engineer with the height slider all the way down to nothing. Then hid behind your turret. Got it, tyvm.

Yeah, I should have specified, I'm talking about PvP .... its insane .... I just had it happen again .... I'm running down a hall, chasing a fed, I'm past his turret, its not even on my screen ... I shoot at him, and what do I do? I fricking turn around (my avatar physically turns around) and starts shooting at the god damned turret.
And what does my opponent do? Exactly what he should do ... shoots me from behind getting massive flanking damage on me.
I survived, but that that just ridiculous ... there is no turret or shield that is ever the threat that another player is .... I should be able to turn it off so I NEVER target anything but players unless I click target on it.
And what's with not being able to click target through shields? Yours or your opponents ... you keep trying to click an opponent who's shooting you on the other side .... and it keeps targeting the damned shield!!!!

You don't even need to do that. The mouse click targeting is interfered with by the turrets even with normal sized players. So, you have to use tab a lot of the time, which cycles through those same turrets.
It's sort of annoying, even though my engineer probably benefits from it.
I'd suggest simply turning off auto-targeting when ground pvping. I have never used it, so I can't say I know what you're going through but it sounds mighty frustrating. That said, without auto target I just tab through targets until I find one I like.
One thing that helps me (but I don't think would help anyone who has auto-target on) is simply double clicking a non-interactive area on the screen. It clears my target assignment area so my avatar doesn't always follow who I am aimed at. People who melee really wreck people with this, as we run up and get behind a guy - who was usually targeting us first - which causes that guy to turn his back on all our friends with guns who get flanking damage now.
You have to kind of trade one for the other - game environ's and ui that can be buggy or "exploited" (harsh term but you know what I mean) or lack of auto-targeting and/or firing.

Like I said in previous post, you can get around that by careful targeting of the manual variety. I started laughing at my roommate the other day when we were pvping against eacho ther and he was relying on that to work for him and I instead shot him dead behind his turret, shield gen, and med gen which he all stacked up infront of himself in a doorway.

I was thinking that might have been me, but I always crouch, and crouching in the Star Trek universe allows you to get hit in the face with a disruptor blast that would have killed less crouching men.

It makes the other pvpers mad, though....
And, yeah, targetting turrets/shields is annoying to a fault. I hate.. Hate.. blowing a long cooldown attack on a shield by accident.
Oh? He didn't say anything about it being PvP. In PvP, don't pause, just pay attention to what you target.

Don't get it meself either???? I alt tab out and read the forums when im on ground pve.....died? almost never. My Boffs are more that capable.
The above has never fought Reman masters obviously.
