I've noticed people talking about the fact that once you go past a tier you never need to use that ship again, so I've come up with an idea that could put people back in their previous ships.
In future missions that I'm sure will be added to the game, how about you limit the size of the vessel to earlier tier ships, for example you need to go through a nebula that reacts badly to the latest nacells that are fitted on the strongest ships in the fleet and the lower tier ships don't have the problem so you can only use those types of ships?
Obviously you'd have to account for how difficult the opposition is in comparrison to the lower tier ships but I think it would be a nice challenge.
Although the idea has merit, all things said what would happen if a TOS Constitution went head to head with a Majestic (theoretically) Although I understand what you say and your love for your earlier ships ( I like my collectors Conny, and especially my Galaxy too) it still isnt reasonable to allow them to do the same things...... Now what would work is changing the loot and xp more to level according to the ship you use.. Say even though your a lvl 45 you use a tier one, they should make it so when you fight other tier ones you get rewarded as if fighting another lvl 45 opponent.. Youd still be limited to low level BO abilities, although you would have higher level equipment the drop and xp could be reduced a little more to make it more beneficial still to use your tier 5 but make a use for your tier 1 nonetheless...

As I recall, there was actually talk of missions quite similar to this in STO before CB. Maybe we'll see something like this in the future.
Well i was figuring the enemy ships would be of the same tier except they would have possibly stronger shields, hull and possibly stronger weaponry and abilities. Don't forget if you fly a lower tier ship you can still fit it with RA admiral level weapons if you like (afaik) and you'll still benefit from improved skills etc.
A better solution would be to actually "upgrade" your former ship that you like to the same capacity as the higher tier ship you have. For example: I love the Akira escort class ship but alas on T5 encounters it's pretty much useless due to lack of firepower and hullstrength. If you could for example jack up that ship to the same capacities as a Fleet or Advanced escort that would be awesome. And you'd have a bigger variety in ships.

I agree. There seems to be a DD, CL, CA, BB mandatory progression concept in the game. To me there would be fun by having it like an actual fleet, and just like all those old ships did, having it to where they augment instead of replace each other. Instead of forcing you into the progression of the bigger is better world.
i think the upgrade idea has merit, and i'd like to see a reason for keeping older ships and re-using them too.
i put forward a suggestion a while ago along the lines of upgrading, which basically boiled down to being able to upgrade a ship by one grade only, so you can play a T3 in T4 by upgrading but couldnt then upgrade that T3 ship again to make it a T5. the upgrade would increase hull strength and shield capacity by 75% and allow for one extra "slot" to be added at the players choice, with the choices being between weapons/devices/consoles. (you could have an extra forward weapon OR an extra console for example)
Boff powers would be upgraded depending on the type of ship and rank, so a T2 cruiser would normally have ensign slots for every profession, and a LT slot for engineering. upgrading it would turn the LT slot into a LT Cmdr slot, but keep the others the same.
basically it makes older ships viable while still keeping the appeal of the newer ships. restricting it to jumping one grade only prevents ships becoming underpowered (two grades and your 50% less effective, three and your 75% down.. ) and makes some degree of sense from canon.
having to bounce back to an older ship for a specific mission is also a nice idea, the only drawbacks i see from that are
- discharging older ships, you can only have 8 and may want all three at one tier, meaning you have to let some go.. if you then need it for a mission later on, thats a problem.
- moving across equipment from current ship to older ships is fairly time consuming, and not everyone would keep older ships up to speed with the most current equipment at all times.
those are fairly minor however, and i'm sure they can be worked around and overcome. it'd be a nice feature to have

Thank you for playing, however.
Why would you discard earlier ships? and whats stopping you from buying a new ship if you have.

Yeah, they successfully achieved that in Eve but i don't think the system in STO can achieve the same thing.
