Petition for Universal Class XO BO Slots on Ships

All the way back to TOS, we've seen first officers, who, rather than mirror their captains, provide very different perspectives and skillsets. Spock brought scientific expertise, as well as logic and reason, to the bold, sometimes brash Kirk. Riker gave Picard, ever the quintessential diplomat and distant superior, both a security-focused view and a more friendly, approchable face for the crew.

First officers and captains in Star Trek have always provided a vivid foil for one another, overcoming personal differences and working together to create a far greater unified whole. Furthermore, they often provided a skillset that differed from both the captain's and their ship's general purpose. Why, then, are XOs in STO forced to adhere to their ship's specialization, which is also usually the captain's class?

I feel that the single higher rank BO slot that ships have, obviously intended to represent the first officer, should be universal, like the slots of the Klingon Bird of Prey class, rather than locked to the ship's central specialization. Not only would this allow players to set up that same duality of abilities and personalities shown in all the shows, but it would even let them keep their first officer with them if they switch ship types.

Feel free to add to the idea if you see a necessary change and bring up valid concerns and problems Cryptic might have with implementing this plan.

    Game Balance.

Viral Matrix III and Torpedo:High Yield III on the same ship would just be evil.

Why don't we open up the skill trees to everyone, make BO's able to do all jobs, and make weapons all fire every kind of damage in the game at once per shot.

But props on using the word petition in the thread title. Mods love that.

Very well written. I agree to a point. My "First Officer" is Sci and I am Eng. While I agree that it would be cool to have some form of First Officer slot on the ship, I don't think they should be any more powerful than any other BOff of the same rank.

I've flown cruisers and escorts all the time my science officer was the girl in red. In fact it was when I tried a science ship that my tactical officer suddenly sat on the chair of the first officer....

I have to say I would be for something a little different. I'm a rear admiral 5 and I have to use all 3 action bars to have room for my weapons and abilities. However, there are three unused slots, and a few that aren't really necessary because I barely use them. So theoretically there would be space to add one additional BO to all ships. That slot could be universal.

    @ Feor

We already have that on a Klingon bird of prey, don't we? The Klingon uber-escort is the one with Viral Matrix.:D

They wouldn't be any more powerful. I'm not advocating adding anything that's not there, simply changing the high level "XO slot" of the vessel's specialization with a universal specialization slot.
