Instead of a death penalty, why not a fail mechanic?
As it stands you cannot fail a mission, or if you can its so easy I have yet to do it.
Why not a mechanic where if you do not complete the objectiv, you "fail" ity and like have to drop and re-get it or SOMETHING
Yes this is something I have never liked about some MMOGs that you cant fail a mission unless you give up on it. Some missions you should simply be able to fail. I think if all of your team dies the whole mission should reset. Or if you die, same thing.
Missions definitely need a fail condition. Maybe one misison could have a timer before some bombs go off... or possibly an escort mission with a freighter that can get blown up... or maybe the Undine create an EMP pulse that turns off your weapons if you're not quick enough. SOMETHING to add a challenge.
If you fail, you can take the mission again. But the purpose is to give the players a sense of accomplishment when they succeed. WOW quests give me that feeling. WOW raids give me that feeling on a grand scale.
You cant fail wow missions either as I recall. If you die your end up back in town with a DP and can go back, you dont have to start over from the beginning... well ok you kinda do if the objective is buried behind mobs.. but you dont have to start a quest chain over... just imagine the Linken quest with a fail mechanic like this. lol Or how about that quest to gather 10 yeti pets that took me two days of grinding?
I agree though that theres no sense of urgency, the first time I experienced this was on the Azura. The game like, HURRY before the warp core explodes lol! The first time I did the quest I ended up stopping to chat about something and nothing happened as a result for just standing around.
Isnt that just semantics? Its like the people wanting a bonus for not dying... not trying to bash or troll, your reply just made me curious.
There can be a failure mechanic with the current system in place (IE no DP) for instance:
You have to defend a ship but it gets killed instead. You just failed.

There are quests in WoW that when you fail then, instead of a "success" (w/e I dont remember) thing next to it you get "fail"

you can retake the failed missions in wow. one of those quests that stands out in my memory the elite mob you need to kill for the quest spawns less than 30 seconds from the quest giver.
so really you can fail in wow no more than loading a saved game in a single player game is a failure.
you can always try again in any video game. DP or not.
for non gamers this what makes some of them not play video games. for them it doesn't have the same tension as a movie, because to paraphrase an example someone else used afew years ago, in video games luke skywalker can get blown up or miss that vent with his torpedoes over and over again and keep trying until he finally gets it right.

Please dont read this as a "how about this: as a death penalty" thread whwn it is "how about instead of a death penalty, we have This:" type thread
