At first I thought its nice but now everyone´s doing what he wants, groups are splitting up making it impossible to do the quest without dying several times.
Even the option "closed team" doesnt help you from being forced to a group who just doesnt act like one.
- no group play
- no communication
- players with cruisers standing back instead of going in first
- players with science ships do dps instead of helping out harmed group players
Thats NOT an MMO... thats just the idea of what never comes true..

No, it IS an MMO. There are a "massive" number of people, playing online. Theres just no cooperation. It happens. Even in WoW. BUT in WoW you can FAIL. Theres the difference. This is a MMO with god mode on. There is NO fail mechanic
On my tactical alt, I grouped up for the Sirius sector patrol missions, and now that I am LC on her, it seems like I have less skill points than I do on my Sci officer which I solo'ed 90% of the time.
Nothing about this game involves your fleet or a team with a strategy.
It's all pewpew everything by yourself or bring more people to pewpew (But against more ships). They don't need to throw a science team on you, the cruiser doesn't need to hit fire-at-will to grab aggro.
Nothing that makes current MMO's fun, this game just lacks every important part.
A lot of people just don't have a technique... a lot of players aren't in a cruiser / escort / science ship because they want to be a tank / dd / or evader, they are there because the ships looked coolest to them
Give players time to become more in-tune with what they do best....
That said...I solo missions, so I can savor them... and I have no intention of doing it any other way for a while...
Fortunately it gets better once you're out of the newbie areas, but I'm going to have to log him on during an odd hour to avoid the TRIBBLE factor.
There is no forced grouping, you can go into your team option and set your default settings to:
I chose option two, and now when I zone into patrol missions, no more annoying people, just me
The third option would work too, however I PVP occasionally, and as such want to be able to join a team if invited so that option would effectively render your toon unable to join any group unless you start it.
Love it or hate it, WoW has the best mix of solo and group content. Most of the game is solo content, but there are many group dungeons in the mix. You don't ever have to do the group content leveling, but it gives you good gear so it is a good idea.
Having a group mission or two mixed in with every capatain rank would increase the community factor in STO. It is missing with the all solo content. Even fleet actions are solo content in that you just need other players around, not needing to be in a team.
I agree that PuGs are never as good as grouping with friends or fleet mates. But so far I have been lucky. I have never had a bad group experience other than no chat from anyone on the team. That is probably becasue the content has been so easy. But that is another story.
My question to you. Do you attempt to cooperate?
Talking isn't really necessary as the graphics are good enough to tell who's being shot at. (both ways) So if you're science then look at who is getting pounded, and IF you have the skill help your players. If you're a tactical person then focus fire on which ever mob is getting shot at by other people around you. Same with engineer.
You also sound like you don't know the science class too well. Science is also about debuffs and in some situations can out dps an escort thanks to a couple of OP skills.
Every forced party mission that I have been on I have followed these tips, and more often than not, I have seen others do the same.
Has anyone noticed if your the team leader you can "use" your teammates and then kick them out of the team at the end but before the final objective and they have to do it all over again?
there is no vote kick for team leaders.
the missions that require one person to do something while the others sit back and watch, for example the one early on where you have to escort the freighter, I played with a guy who took the freighter 50k out then laughed and left the team.
there are a few more
How long before people start abusing this?
Do you want me to fraps you a video showing how it completely ignores that setting giving you an error at first (error joining open instance team) in red then joining you into the open instance anyway?
You can change the setting to whatever you want, it WILL FORCE YOU into an open instance group at times.
I'd set it to closed or a reason....to get my reroll done as quickly as possible without being slowed down; it annoyed me enough to drop the project and find other things to do.
When was the video made? Because I have it set for no party and I've yet to get any kind of error.
Personally, I will not do fleet actions or defend missions until they manage the simple task of creating a new instance if a full group tries to enter (why, oh why does it split up a pre-made group in DSE's??? And to add insult to injury, we can no long even switch to an instance to try to get us all in the same one??).
Nor will I do Patrol missions if I am solo since I invariably get auto-grouped (even though my group settings are set for 'Closed") when I do.
I play this game with friends that I have been playing MMOs with since the early EQ days. If I want to play with random people, it should be on MY terms, not forced on me.
Regards !
In my experience people cooperate for the most part. Things are definately disorganized but there's enough cooperation to get things done. The biggest problem is not really cooperation as someone needs to take the leadership role and step up and say THIS is the group we attack next. When I first started playing and discovered the open instance grouping I went through several days of nothing but one Defened Sector Blcok TRIBBLE mission after another. It was great.
There are times when I'd like to do a one on one dual with some PvE ships and I do miss that I can't just call up something like that (although many quests seem to include something) . However, if you're going to have so much group content I find this a relatively painless way to do it.
Oh and please. Stop holding up WoW as some sort of MMO that's head and shoulders above all others. In subscriber count yes, but in terms of machanics? LOL! If you think WoW is so much better then everything else do everyone a favor and just go back to it.
This does not, and at the risk of repeating myself - DOES NOT apply to the OP or anyone in this thread. A valid point was made and I wanted to weigh in on the discussion.
As a general rule I am a solo type player. Yes, it generally takes me longer to move through content (present game excluded), but I try to enjoy myself along the way. Much like WOW, I just did what I could do solo and only grouped out of necessity. Even then, at least at the lower levels, it was over in a little bit and I could go back to doing my own thing.
I think that is the key, however: necessity. That is something severely lacking in this game. Not even the Fleet Actions require grouping and really no cooperation to any real degree (Crystalline Entity does require a modicum of it). That is, at its core, a major flaw. Then being forced to group becomes nothing more than a slap in the face.
Why group up when the game does not offer a sufficient challenge?
Simply throwing more mobs at us, with more hit points, is not adding any challenge to the most casual of gamers much less to those that understand the basic mechanics of game play. Multiple, simultaneous (or near simultaneous) objectives, an AI that does more than simply unload everything it has as fast as it can (with a small smattering of abilities), an interactive environment (No, hailing Starfleet/KDF and having only one option to advance a quest is not interactive), multiple paths to the same end point (based on personal choice/decision) or *gasp* a different outcome. These are just a few of the things that add some small amount of challenge to a game.
Not to beat a dead horse (mainly because I promised never to mention WOW more than once per message), but no matter if you like or hate WOW there is little doubt that many of the encounters requiring groups/raids were certainly challenging. Well, at least until some guild spent hours figuring out how to beat them (which is why I have always been an advocate of encounter updates - Now there's a challenge, not knowing exactly what you are going to get when you zone in.... but that is not germane to this discussion). That is why grouping was necessary. It took cooperation to achieve the end goal.
So in the end, until we have a reason to work together, there is simply no reason to group together.
Toodles!
PS: Just so you know, I bet I spent more time previewing and fixing this post than i spent typing it. I am not sure what that says about me but there you go!
hit "O" then turn it off.
Sorry but I like to be mainly a debuffer and damager, and I like the ship, not paper thin and not a flying brick................................. so boooo freakedy hoooooooooooo
