My rant on 3 things... and yes I'm still playing

Some things that I find annoying.

I did realize that the game was unfinished but decided to buy a lifetime sub, mostly because I love the IP. While I can put up with broken skill system, sector space, immature players with stupid ship names, and a few bugs there are some things that just **** me off, I listed them below.

1. Experience Nerfs: So a few weeks after launch and die hard fanboi’s make RA5 and start complaining it was too easy to level. The result is that Cryptic decided to nerf the experience from Deep Space Encounters (DSEs), this was the vehicle that the die hard fanboi’s used to level up so fast. Their hypocritical complaints caused the nerf. Why am I annoyed? Because I work a full time job and play part-time. I would love to have used missions to level but many of them are: ridiculously long, don’t save if you need to leave them to do adult things like go to bed early to go to work on time or cook dinner, and many are bugged so badly that they crash and you just have lost several hours with no experience points given.

2. PVP not an option: PVP is still a joke, I’m not a big fan of PvP usually but since DSEs are nerfed and the missions are still broken in my opinion I took a look again and was again dissapointed. Klingons use Federation players as easy targets, its so unbalanced that its less fun to play then WoW’s PvP was and that’s saying a lot. Yes I am aware that the Klingon faction is simply monster play at this point due to lack of content.

3. Too many Fanboi’s running guilds: I decided to quit the guild (fleet) I was in since beta because the guild leader proved to be so much a fanboi that any discussion of the game had to be 100% positive on the guild forums and in guild chat. This reminded me of my EQ days…as an adult gamer I’m not going to put up with that. I would name them here but I don’t care to add drama and honestly he’s in for a world of problems since the game lacks any reason to guild or group beyond the aspect of making friends, etc. I did join a different guild and so far they seem objective and rather non-fanboi like. I would like to just point out that the majority of guilds I have run into are way too fanatically pro cryptic. Sometimes calmly discussing issues with the game is productive and results in posts coming to a place like this that have been more clearly crafted.

So now that leveling to RA5 from Cmdr 7 will take me a good month due to item 1 above I would like to thank all those RA5’s that complained about DSEs after using them to level on up and thank Cryptic for listening to them. You guys are killing the game… I hate grinds and I’m not alone, and this MMOG is a worse grind (without DSEs or Missions you can save your place in) then any one I have ever played and that includes EQ.

Cryptic, you should have left the DSEs the way they were and focused on fixing missions so they can be completed in steps that weren’t an hour long each. Then you could nerf DSEs.

Whatever….I doubt this game will be around in a year anyways…your listening to your fanbois and I can gaurentee there are not enough of them to keep the lights on.

First let me say that "die-hard fanbois" aren't the ones making RA5 quickly. Power-Gamers are. Power-gamers have nothing to do with Fanbois. There are Power-Gamers who hate this game because they ran through it in a week and there are Fanbois at Lt. Cmdr 4 right now who might not make RA5 in 3 months. So please try to focus on which group you're really having nerd-rage against in your post. It might not be who you think it is. :)

Good point so I'll just have to say its likely both of them. I have run into many fnabois that were RA5 and screaming at Cryptic to nerf leveling speed and I suppose an equal number of power gamers.

    I'm neither.

Currently it will take me months ot level to RA5 for the simple reason the missions are broken and take horus to complete usually.

Have you tried doing the story line missions? I have crashed in the middle of those, and was placed exactly where I left off when I logged back in. Granted, the storyline missions won't take you all the way through the level, so you will need to grind the exploration or DSEs, or PvP as well. But I don't seee a problem with having to play other aspects of the game.

I don't really get what you are saying about missions taking too long. The longest random mission takes about 15 minutes. It takes about 30-45 minutes to complete an entire storyline mission.

And I don't know how you can possibly say this is a worse grind than EQ when you are already half way through the game.

Klingon's do not own PvP. They do better in the arena settings, but Fed does better in the take-and-hold. It's just tougher to get in the take-and-hold because there are fewer klingons and they all que for the arena.

Anyway, I hope you find something you like to do better than DSEs.

Fanbois tend to be people who stick up for the game. They're not the ones screaming at Cryptic the Haters are. The Fanbois the ones screaming at the people screaming at Cryptic. :)

I don't know what missions you're playing that are broken. I have an RA5, a Cpt 3, a Lt. Cmdr 4, and a Lt. 8 and generally haven't found a lot of "broken" missions. I've found several bugs but I probably haven't had more then a handful of missions I couldn't complete spread over 4 characters. Of course that's on the Federation side. I haven't tried any of the Klingon side as I know that material isn't finished and I didn't see the point of trying it until after the 45 day patch. Likewise, with the PvP material.

Over half my fleet is RA:5 or will be by the end of this week. Supposedly a chunk of end game content is coming this week - I am reserving my judgment until I see the content and if it will be enough to keep me logging in each day.

I am overall happy with the game so far but as with any MMO you need meaningful endgame to keep people logging in. I really hope they pull through with something interesting and fun.

To your first point I have been working on missions and crashed in the middle and never have I been at a point I could continue from where I left off. In addition DSEs are not repeatable for measurable skill points now, at least not at Cmdr 7 and thats about half way through the leveling process. I would love to play other aspects of the game if they were playable.

That brings me to another point, the map system is difficult to use so exploration becomes tedious.

That would seem like a very simple fix.. but.. I suppose its not due to some game engine issue.

Agreed... no endgame = no reason to play.

Well, OP, had you posted this a bit more constructively, I would have been more than willing to invite you into the Cerberus Task Force, as we discuss the game in it's current state in great detail and realism. We are generally optimistic, but know, understand and even gripe on it's flaws. I've heard nobody on my Vent server discuss anything negative about the game that was shut up, but we are generally civil in how we go about it.

However, because of the general tone and some of the other negative content, I'd have to assume that what you'd say wouldn't stay civil, so I won't be inviting you any time soon. Granted, you may not care one bit about that, but I say it anyway, in the off chance you decide to settle down a bit.

    .

Well, if you have the LTS, at least there's no rush to level...

However, you say you're only a "part-time" player...? Even casual players are hitting Admiral within 3 weeks, some even sooner. And what about weekends? Surely you can play at least 3-4 hrs at a time on weekends? And when I played the storyline missions, on the rare occasion I couldn't finish one at a single sitting (even the longest is probably only a few hours, if that) they did save when I returned; didn't have to do the whole thing over (unless I chose to, or had to, cause it was glitched or something).

Actually, it's the so-called "fanboys" who aren't leveling (apparently at all). They try and intentionally play absurdly slow, so as to pretend there's way more to the game than there is. (then they make a self-congratulatory thread about how "I'm still only level 5! The amount of content is just fine as it is!")

Your right, I don't care one bit. In fact I will point out that I am happy with the current guild I am in, they are mature, have as sense of humor, and discuss the game in frank terms in a non-hostile way. My previous guild did not and thus we parted ways. As I re-read what I have posted I have to admit it is negitive but its also calmly posted. You might have found yoruself a collection of people that like the game so much that they are willing to forgive issues like the ones I listed andalso refrain from discussing them.

Must be so nice to be content looking at life through rose colored glasses.

I prefer reality, I prefer frank and honest discussion. Only through such can the right information be filterted through to a fourm like this. So in a way the fanbois that run all those guilds out there in STO are killing any chance at constructive discussion by refusing to allow their players the ability to discuss the game objectively.

My definition of Casual = about 15 to 20 hours of play per week. Wih all the bugs I have experienced and the fact I tried hard to use missions and not DSEs until Cmdr you should understand why I'm ****ed. I hate the grind and if the missions did't crash or wer enot stupidly long I would have been fine with using them.

The DSE nerf means that instead of 2 weeks for me to get to RA5 from where I am I have a good month and a half.

Seems like both Gamespot and IGN reviews of STO were dead on....
