SystemSystem Member, NoReporting Posts: 178,019 Arc User
Hello, I get black screens sometimes when I enter zones or pivot the camera too fast in certain areas, it locks up the whole computer and requires a reboot.
I have all my graphics settings turned down to their most minimum level and have dynamic lighting off.

I am useing an Athlon64 machine
K8nnXP gigabyte motherboard
ATI x800 graphics card
and a LGA W2361V flat screen with VGA cable connection.

Help would be very much apreciated :)

    Run a dxdiag, save all information, and copy/paste the system information and display devices sections to this thread.

    If you need more info on doing this check out post three in my FAQ http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=118737

    You are running the latest 9.11 from 11/17/2009 correct? I haven't checked those older cards to see if that is the current driver used for them. If not - http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Legacy/Pages/radeonaiw_xp.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.17&lang=English

    What power supply are you running? (Brand, Wattage, and 12V rail amps)

    Yes my ATI driver is up to date, that was the first thing I updated when I encountered these problems with STO and am useing the exact same software on that site, other games like WoW, Fallout 3, and teamfortress 2 run fine

    Yeah I just checked my XT850 system and show the same. :)

    Looks like a good PSU also. It might just come down to the video card being too old. I am able to play on my XT850 system but don't use it enough to know if it would crash in the same way or not.

    I did come across some tech issues relating to changing your AGP setting in the BIOS and on the driver, but don't recall the details. It had to do with the SmartGart settings.

    Sorry, hopefully others will have a better answer for you.

    Darn, are there any additional settings I can turn down? the other games I mentioned earlier run excellently with reduced settings.
    I'm working on getting a new PC, but currently I am paying off some bills and it would not be responsible to go out and get a new PC, so I would really apreciate any work being done that will allow the game to run well at reduced settings

    Here is an AGP troubleshooting article, you might want to look through it.

    That GPU is below specs. In Option - Video set Half Resolution = ON and set resolution to 1024x768.

    The minimum system requirements are:
    * OS: Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista / Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit)
    * CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 Ghz or AMD Athlon X2 3800+
    * Memory: 1GB RAM
    * Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7950 / ATI Radeon X1800 / Intel HD Graphics
    * Sound: DirectX 9.0c Compatible Soundcard
    * DirectX: Version 9.0c or Higher
    * HDD: 10GB Free Disk Space
    * Network: Internet Broadband Connection Required
    * Disc: 6X DVD-ROM

    Did you already troubleshoot the settings?

    Fast Write Off
    AGP Write Off
    AGP Speed 4X instead of 8x

    If you search forums on the XT800 and these settings people had to adjust them for stability in their games.

    I have not tried running 1024x768

    I am not sure about halfing my AGP pipeline like milehighscott suggested though, other games run fine with 8x so it seems like shooting myself in the foot twice to reduce the pipeline by half. I tried to look for the X800 forum but I had little luck so if you could post the url I would apreciate it

    It's just troubleshooting to isolate the problem you are getting in game, this is free versus the easier answer of "go buy a better card". :)

    There is no X800 forum per say, just Google "X800 fast write"

    damn, it seems so simple I should have tried it sooner, I turned down the res from 1920 x 1080 too 1152 x 864 ( Half resolution off, so the game was running in full res ) and it ran mostly fine for almost 9 hours streight ( marathon played :) ).

    I say mostly because at one point I had to go to the exchange and browse through a couple long lists. I think it's a known issue everyone has but that did eat up my ram until the message memory low running at reduced settings popped up and the game began to run more slowly until I shut it down and restarted the game.
