Why only 3 character slots?

For players who want to experience each specialized profession, ie: Science, Engineering, Tactical, and then wants to roll a Klink, we are simply unable to do so :(

why??

Seriously though Cryptic, with your IP taking a burning wreck for not being complete and groves of players leaving after the 1st 30 days, why did you make a design decision to limit players experience on this level?

Allowing players at least 4, preferably 6 character slots, you enable us the opportunity to try out everything and give us a little leverage to keep a few characters at lower lvl range for RP purposes or lower lvl PvP.

This was asked a long time ago. The thread may be in the archive now so the search probably won't have picked it up.

If i remember correctly, there is only 3 slots because of the amount of data attached to each character. More character slots will become available down the line but i think we will need cryptic points to access them.

The may increase it in the future. The problem was the sheer size of each character on the server.
You not only have the character look and stats, but the BO's Look and stats and the ships look and stats. That is alot of info.

Official reason is database space or HDD space or something along those lines. I assume that extra slots will appear on the C-store. It will be none too soon IMO.

That would be cool. The 1000 cp 'bonus' I got from preorder is mocking me like a giant middle finger. It'd be nice to spend it on something.

The reason given is the amount of data needed to store each character. Taking into concideration each character has its appearance, uniforms, equipment, skills and numerious ships (again with their own equipment and customisation). Plus the BOs, with their skills, equipment, appearance, uniforms, etc.

They won't give you for free what people will pay for.

I read somewhere that you get 1 Klingon character, and 3 Feds character slots, even though it says 3 slots.

The reasons listed are the ones given but its not really the truth. Cryptic rushed this game out because they needed the money. They did everything on the cheap (not enough hardware to handle open beta). Closed beta complaints about 2d space that never got resolved because of the cost to overhaul the game engine . Before launch they advertised releasing more content for Klings which also points to rushed release. Knowing they have one of the most popular IP's they can put out a bad product and get people to hang around for hope of something better.

In my opinion they shot themselves in the foot with the speed at which a player can level. When you have nothing for people to do at cap you should force them to grind it out and allow more time to get it out there. At this point what ever content they release will merely be a couple days of play till back to the same ole Cracked earth , solar wind , Assimilated Factory.

With that said , I did buy the 1 year plan , purely for the extra slots. I knew what this game was about from the get go . I leveled my toons on the fed side to t4 and my Kling to nearly t5 and now have stopped as I wait for the content that is coming in the weeks ahead.

    Official reason is a lie.

I have a generally positive attitude about this game. It's already more entertaining for me than any other MMO I've played, it suits my sensibilities, and I think they released it when they had to, like every other MMO. I'm glad it's as polished as it is. Sure, it needs content, fixes, work on stuff they did last minute (skill caps), and so on, but that's part of the MMO deal.

All that said, the 3 char slots boggles me. It's VERY unusual for modern Western MMOs, and when coupled with the usual lack of initial content and not so usual rapid advancement is particularly strange.

If you have a quick game with light content, you want people to have fun fiddling around with the character modeler (granted, you can do that in the costume shop or with BOffs, but still...), you want people relieving their itch by trying out unusual options (the all-ground pvp character, the guy with all mines skills, the...)

As it is, I've been feeling the pressure with 3 slots; I really wanted to try a purely ground-pvp oriented klingon character, but ... not enough slots. I already have a fed tac, fed sci, and kdf engineer with space traits. I didn't realize how much I'd enjoy ground pvp... and am kicking myself. But I don't want to give up any of the three I have!

Oh, and as the previous poster mentioned, the official reason is full of targ leavings.

Given when you mouse over the create new character option on the menu screen it tells you to "buy more at the c-store" if you have no more available slots I would assume they plan on adding the option to the c-store sometime in the near future.

As far as the "official reason" of it taking up to much space, I'd have to say definitely a exaggeration. Given character b/o and ship appearance are merely options a,b,x, etc.. assigned to character_x the space they'd take up is probably no more then 200-300kbs if. For reference a single lvl 80 character in World Of Warcraft and all their pertinent stats(char appearance, armor, bank, quest log, faction rep etc..) is around 78kb of data.

Using this as a base reference 5 million accounts each with 3 characters would take up a mere 2.2-2.5 terabytes of storage space.

Really though, if gmail, with it's 91.6 million users can give each free gmail account about 7.5 gigs of storage space, I don't see any reason other then profit/greed why sto can't give us at least 6 slots a piece.
